Lomo-Impressions of the Santa Cruz Carnival in Tenerife

Being the good Canarian that I am, I would do anything to be part of carnival. After being away from home for over 6 years, things were going to be different this year! So I put on my costume and jumped out in the street with my camera in hand.

The carnival in Tenerife is famous all throughout Spain. Some parts are even aired on national TV, such as the election of the carnival queen and the march of musical bands that concludes the festivities. For me, the best part of the carnival in Santa Cruz is the amicable nature; everybody comes out on the streets to have a good laugh and make fun of each other.

The atmosphere is incredible and everybody gets to enjoy the carnival celebrations, young and old. Most schools and colleges organize a pre-carnival party the week before the holidays. During the week of carnival itself, the festivities take place during the day as well as at night.

Having missed out on carnival for the last 6 times, I was really looking forward to it this year! So I dug up my old gypsy costume, added a beard to the outfit, and ended up looking like the bearded lady! Who cares, if the guys can put on wigs, than why shouldn’t I put on beard?!

There were lots of people with more imagination and more guts than me. Have a look at the pictures below and you’ll find Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, sexy cleaning ladies, cupcakes, etc.!
