Amazing Flashing Baubles

4

Ho ho ho ho ho Lomo!!! Christmas is here and if you are anything like me, you have started to stock up on film and the like, but what about your flash? Why not give it a very festive makeover!

For this flash I took two baubles. It is important to make sure that they are transparent enough for the light to get through. I stood for a long time in the super market holding baubles up to the light trying to see through them – I was eventually asked to leave. But it is essential that the bauble is see through other wise the flash won’t …well… flash.

To make it, I took the bulb from an old broken flash and the one from my Diana F+ (there was a very good reason for me choosing this flash to bastardise, but you will see later.) Carefully I took the flash apart (by the way, nice touch from Lomo on the inside of the flash is the Lomo girl icon!) I cannot stress to you how careful you have to be when playing with flashes. If you touch two of the terminals you’ll get an almighty jolt – if I had a piggy for every time I electrocuted myself making this flash I would be very VERY rich.

I took 3 lengths of wire. I soldered a length of wire to each of the ends of the extra bulb and the other end of the wire to the corresponding ends of the Diana flash. The third wire I then soldered connecting the flashes power supply (seriously this thing hurts) to its terminal on the extra flash bulb. Then I used the hot shoe from the broken flash and soldered it to the corresponding terminals on the Diana’s circuit board. I wired up the battery and my flash was good to go. Almost.

I have always found that the flash ready light on the Diana flash reminded me of something… something very festive. I think you can see from the pictures what I wanted to do with that light.

When I did my test roll I used two different baubles one was a frosted white with a glitter pattern and the second was a dappled green but really there is nothing stopping you using any colour. In fact you could use the coloured shades from fairy lights – hook up a few flash bulbs together…and… well.. I won’t say any more, you have to wait until next Christmas.

Yeah ! Such a nice one ! Ahaha you got electrocuted ! I'm imagining you jumping at every discharge... I'm not sure, but I think it's thousands of volts in a fraction of second... Cool results dude ! It was worth it : )
