Giza Pyramids and Big Sphinx

6

Silent witnesses of a thousand years, Giza Pyramids and Big Sphinx never disappoint anybody.

I absolutely agree that Giza Pyramids and Big Sphinx are regarding original “visiting card” of Egypt. There’re about one hundred pyramids in Egypt but most famous, huge and impressive ones located in Giza Plato. They named The 3 Great Pyramids of Giza: Pyramid of Cheops, Pyramid of Khafre and Pyramid of Menkaure. Even in ancient times it’s considered as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. And from those days this is only one surviving “wonder”.

The biggest pyramid is Pyramid of Cheops, for 2nd pharaoh of IV Dynasty Khufu (Cheops in Greek). Today this pyramid is one of the biggest architecture monuments of people hands. Its height from construction was 146.6 meters. But today is around 137.6 meters (higher blocks felled down because of earthquake). Approximately 2.3 billion stone blocks 2.5 tons each were used for construction which is ended 2590 B.C. Individual blocks is so precisely fitted to each other that is no space for knife blade between them.

Other pyramid is dedicated for pharaoh Khafre. Its height is 136 meters. It has some signs of white facing on the top. I’d succeed to go downstairs exactly this pyramid in particular. For sad any kind of photo shooting within its inside area was strictly prohibited. From this pyramid the whole view of pyramid complex looks better. I mean two mortuary temples (one close to the pyramid and one near the Nile), road between them, Big Sphinx and pyramid.Smaller pyramid is Pyramid of Menkaure. It was built in 2505 B.C. Its height from construction was 66.5 meters (today – 62 meters). It also has some signs.
Great Pyramids are part of spacious Giza Necropolis which consists of several smaller pyramids for pharaoh’s wives, pagan priests and top officials. Big Sphinx is also significant part of this complex. It’s a resting lion with men’s face. It has no nose because Mameluke soldiers shoot off it.

My impression of Great Pyramids sightseeing was exited and contradictory simultaneously. After returning home I learnt official (Pyramids are cult and cultural facilities) and alternative theories (geographical, “temporary” and “extraterrestrial” theories) of pyramids and compared them with each other and with my visual impressions. My questions weren’t become less.

As for shooting experience I’d rather recommend to use Horizon because of opportunity to capture great panoramas. Some x-pro would be fine too. All surroundings of Pyramids and sands will introduce strong yellowish tones to all of your shots.

Back in the 1990s, Gilbert Blecken was a big music fan and wrote for his own small music fanzine. He would interview bands in between sound checks and take photographs of them. He was never a professional photographer or worked for a company; he simply did it for his fanzine. Twenty years on, Gilbert’s photographs have matured into an amazing documentation of some of the biggest music icons of that era.
