The F in the Diana F+

10

After years of doing everything to avoid flashing my subjects, I got to know the Diana Flash. It is just another perfect addition to this wonderful camera.

I never really liked flash. The red eyes, the pale over-exposed faces, the faded colors… Well, it turned out I just didn’t meet the right fella. The Diana Flash, while attached to the camera, is positioned high enough to prevent the red-eyes effect, and gives a very nice lighting to the scene, even from very close by (while using the close-up lens). I find the amount of light it sheds on the subject just perfect – not too much and not too little.

Another nice thing about the Diana Flash is the option to use it while detached from the camera body. You can hold it up higher, aim it from the side, from underneath or let your subject hold it! Fire at will to get some funky lighting effects. And not to forget – in long exposures, you can fire it again and again and again…

Well, I did not even get to the colored gels that come with the Diana Flash, and open yet another dimension of endless fun – wash your friends in overwhelming magenta, paint your cat yellow, or use one of the subtle colors, for a gentle tint.
A friend asked me when he saw me pointing the Diana at him, armed with the flash “does this camera look so funny so that people on the photos are always laughing?” Well, that also, is a clear bonus :)

Honestly, the Diana flash is pretty crap. The entire reflective faceplate broke and fell off within the first few weeks of having it so I had to make a new one out of tin foil, plastic and a hell of a lot of stickytape.

Dude. Good review. I love the Diana flash and like that you can put different colored filters into each side of the filter holder. Great photos!

    My Lomo’Instant Quick Tips

I backed the Kickstarter project for the Lomo’Instant earlier this year and was thrilled to receive it last week. I love how the camera naturally encourages you to experiment with its different features, whether it’s through flashing your multiple exposures with different colors or trying different creative techniques after your shots has been ejected. Here are a few tips from what I’ve discovered from playing with the camera so far (and a couple of tips I want to try out in future)!
