Kennywood Amusement Park

3

Phantom Fright Nights. However, great park food abounds, and the hot sausages at the center stand by the Potato Patch are GREAT!

Kennywood Park is one of the oldest amusement parks still in business. It is located along the banks of the Monongahela River, and the site has a rich history dating back to 1775 when the Battle of Monongahela was fought there. During the American Civil War, the site was a popular picnic grove for locals owned by farmer Anthony Kenny and was known as “Kenny’s Grove”. Eventually, it became a trolley park catering to local industrial workers and their families, and thusly, Kennywood Park was born in 1898.

Amusements began to be added and with a change in ownership in 1906, Kennywood continued to grow into the park known and loved today. In true Pittsburgh fashion, it has a large devoted and loyal fan base. As a side note, when the Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl XL in 2006, safety Mike Logan, who grew up near Kennywood, made a play on the familiar champion’s advertising campaign phrase “I’m going to Disney World!”, by saying, " Forget Disney World, I want them to open up Kennywood!" Needless to say, it’s a true Pittsburgh tradition.

The park currently has 6 roller coasters, 3 of which are wooden. The Jack Rabbit and The Racer were both built in the 1920’s and will still give you a heck of a ride. A seventh steel coaster will be debuting in 2010. Kennywood’s coaster make use of the hilly Pittsburgh terrain, which enables coaster designs that wouldn’t be feasible anywhere else, with immediate drops right out of the gate and other coasters passing through the supports of the coaster that you are on. I’ve been on many roller coasters, and I have to say that the coasters at Kennywood are by far my favorites.

I took our little LC-A+ to Kennywood in October for Phantom Fright Nights, a Halloween extravaganza held at the park on Friday and Saturday nights during the month of October. About 3/4 of the park is open and decked out with Halloween flair, with ghouls, ghosts, and goblins roaming the park, ready to pounce at any moment.

I recommend eating at the Potato Patch, which is probably the most famous eatery at the Park. However, great park food abounds, and the hot sausages at the center stand by the Potato Patch are GREAT!

Please visit the Kennywood website: http://www.kennywood.com

And please visit the park anytime you are in Pittsburgh – it is an absolute must!

Thanks Stouf... I meant for the last one to be the first shot, but I didn't realize that the first one you put in goes last. Ooops. I feel really bad that I didn't get my locations in in time - we were almost a full two weeks behind and it just fell at a time when my mom had back surgery and I got sick. The winning location was awesome though! Perhaps there was no beating that one anyways. Maybe they'll choose a second winner like they did a couple of stages ago too! That would rock. My others still haven't posted for some reason though they were submitted. Patience I guess.

It's late October in Copenhagen and summer was well and truly behind us. With the nights drawing in, the chances of going out with one of my cameras was slim. All was not lost at this time of year, however, as it allowed me time to focus on my own personal music projects—I am a professional composer/musician and audio engineer at my own studio by day.
