Sculpture Park Carlucci Land

2

I recently returned to my hometown of Wellington, New Zealand after four years of living in London to find my neighbour had become a sort of local celebrity. I just had to capture this on film!

“From Mini Golf, to Stone Masonry, to Cherished junk”

Carl Gifford is the charismatic personality behind Carlucci Land. His passion for the environment is matched by his passion for the creative and he has become a household name to Wellington locals. Carl has been in business for over 25 years, progressing from a successful career as a mechanic, to the artist and campaigner he is known as today. His creative path began when he turned his hand to masonry beautifully formed stone walls using locally sourced materials. It wasn’t long before Carl began to look at his medium from a unique perspective, truly understand the physical attributes of the rocks he was working with and how to apply their raw value to works of art. His enthusiastic delivery has captured the imaginat hundreds of thousands of visitors to Carlucci Land, from the inception of his great vision, where a few of his sculptures guarded the entry to Owhiro Bay from Happy Valley Road, to the grand Sculpture Park Carlucci Land is today.

Transient Living: Armitage & McMillan in Denver, Colorado

If you want to know the heart of a person, peek inside his/her wardrobe! And no, nobody famous said that; I only just made it up. But really, don't you think it's true? After all, the way we dress screams our personality; at least for most of us. And that is why, as soon as I land on a new city, one of the things I absolutely must do is find the local boutiques. Sure, I love the fancy chain boutiques as much as the next person, but there's just something else about a local clothing store. It's unique!

Summer Hot Spots: A Morning Sunbath in Varazze

This is the story of my first adventure on the beach this year. In the middle of June, I took my first sunbath along the seaside on a small public beach in Varazze - a rather small and unkempt place which I will never return to in the future. Read more to find out why!

Fresh from the Lab: Hari Raya Portraits

A couple of weeks ago, my family and I celebrated Hari Raya after a month of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. Since the first day I laid my hands on the Lubitel 166+, I've always had the thought of taking portraits of my family. So this year, I finally took them. Here they are: Hari Raya Portraits!

Patrick Park 'Dust and Mud' or How I Learned to Utilize the LomoKino

Last October I toured southern California with musician Patrick Park, a LomoKino and a plethora of film. I'd intended to capture the scenic terrain and abstract beauty of the land, but fell short on my first attempt to control the Lomokino.

Every year I get the winter blues. I start imagining the feel of the sunrays, ice cold beer after a long summer day, and the endless hours spent on the beach. I have captured moments, memories, and dreams this year, which is my favorite thing to do. This is a short version and visual diary of my year 2014.

Fresh from the Lab: Silvia Precisa

Recently, I used my trusty Fuji Silvi. It may not be my all-time favorite camera, but I just wanted to use it because I kind of missed shooting with it. So I decided to look through my film stash to see what I could use with the Fuji Silvi. After much consideration, I ended up picking the old Agfa CT Precisa ISO 100 to get that classic blue tone. Silvia Precisa!

The World According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.

    Object of My Affection: Subbuteo

In my early adolescence, I liked to play table football. For my 12th birthday, my parents gifted me with a wonderful Subbuteo table soccer game set that I had wished for many months! This was my favorite toy until I discovered other interesting hobbies, like ham radio and electronics. So after some years, I gave away this game to other kids. I always remembered this game with pleasure and a hint of nostalgia.

My brother had a photo exhibition last year at the North Sea Jazz Festival and got two tickets. So just like the old days with our father, we went to the Ahoy Rotterdam for an evening of jazz and other music. I was armed with an analogue SLR camera, telephoto lens, and sensitive film!

Fresh from My Darkroom: The First Game of the New Rugby Season

Last Sunday, the local rugby team Rugby Como played the first match of the 2014-1025 season. Rugby is my favorite sport to photograph, and for some years I've been documenting almost every home match of this young team. This time I used a 1959 Zorki 5 camera with a vintage 1958 Industar-50 lens loaded with a timeless film, the Ilford HP5+ developed in a century-old developer, the mythical Rodinal. Take a look after the jump!
