Holiday Celebrations and Traditions: Three Wise Men Parade in Spain

4

One of my favorite holiday traditions since I live in Spain, is taking my nephews to the Wise Men Parade also known as the Cavalcade of Magi. Read more about it after the jump!

In Spain, one of the biggest traditions for the holiday season is the arrival parade of the Three Wise Men. One afternoon, before the kids get their presents left behind by the Three Magi, a big celebration takes the streets so the kids can give them their letters with their requests for presents.

In my opinion it’s a very nice celebration, because whole families get together that afternoon and get into warm clothes to see the parade pass by their streets. The first part of the parade consists on receiving the Three Wise Men. Depending on where you live they can arrive by train, bus, boat or in the case of my town, a helicopter — yes a huge helicopter!

This is where the fun starts: kids of all ages have such happy faces and scream waving their letters in enthusiasm to gain the attention of their favorite Magi or even one of their helpers. It’s so great to see their faces light up with excitement, they’ve been waiting for this the whole year!

Once the Three Magi say hello to the kids, they walk into their royal carriages which are big floats attached to cars, trucks and sometimes even tractors. There’s always a pre-defined route that normally crosses the town, giving an opportunity for everyone to see them. The kids that didn’t have the opportunity to hand their letters at the arrivals, this is the best chance they get, since on the street the Wise Men’s helpers recollect all those letters so kids can keep calm and enjoy the rest of the parade.

By this time, the streets are filed with a bustling celebration, people handing out candy, music and an amazing ambiance that transforms that afternoon into an incredible experience for all kids and grown-ups.

So, if you are ever around Spain for the holiday season, do try to attend one of the parades! Who knows, you might even be able to say hello to one of the Three Wise Men in person!

Happy Lomo Holidays!

Arrive by helicopter? That's a real modernization from the original wise men. They had to walk many miles following the star to find Jesus. If I get to Spain, I will have to check the schedule for this event.

@bsdunek yep, It is a major improvement lol. It happens every year on January 5th during the afternoon ;)

The people of a city, to me, speak volumes about its culture and sense of community. And that is why I sought out the people who make Denver that much more interesting after the initial period of settling down. My search lead to a few establishments that have contributed to making Denver what it is today. In the second story on Transient Living, I present to you two of such establishments: The Craftsman & Apprentice, and A Small Print Shop.

Fresh from My Darkroom: The First Game of the New Rugby Season

Last Sunday, the local rugby team Rugby Como played the first match of the 2014-1025 season. Rugby is my favorite sport to photograph, and for some years I've been documenting almost every home match of this young team. This time I used a 1959 Zorki 5 camera with a vintage 1958 Industar-50 lens loaded with a timeless film, the Ilford HP5+ developed in a century-old developer, the mythical Rodinal.
