Meet On The Road Lomo Amigo, Collin Hughes!

Meet our final On The Road Amigo! To celebrate the opening of On The Road on December 21st, we gave some of our favorite American photographers Lomo LC-A+ cameras and handfuls of film! Meet the final one, our pal, Collin Hughes!

Name: Collin Hughes
City: Brooklyn
Camera: Lomo LC-A+

Tell us about yourself. What do you do for a living? What are your interests?
I’m a photographer for a living, and it’s been very good to me. My interests revolve around meeting new people and figuring out how to be in 3 different places in a week.

How long have you been a Lomographer (or are you new to this whole thing)?
I’m such a newb…except I have been shooting with a Fuji Natura for the past couple years for fun.

What was your LC-A+ shooting experience like?
….exciting. It involved a flat tire and good friends.

How would you compare the LC-A+ to the equipment you usually shoot with?
Streamlined. I usually shoot with Canon 5d Mark 3s and 1Vs for my work, so it comparatively it’s much less.

Describe the Lomo LC-A+ in 2 sentences.
No skills necessary. Common sense and whimsy required.

Can you share one of your secrets to taking great pictures?
Enjoy yourself. It’s similar to great travel stories, all created by the unexpected resulting from being curious and excited. If you feel the same way about how you take photos, you’ll always turn out with great stuff.

What do you like best about low-fi/alternative photography?
No matter how hard you try to make it perfect, it never will be. It’s a blast to just be carefree and take photos for the hell of it.

The one person (living or deceased) who you would most like to photograph.
Louis Kahn in his heyday. I studied architecture in college and still wish I could photograph some of my biggest inspirations in the spaces they created.

What’s strangest, funniest, hands-down greatest or most “unusual” photographic/Lomographic encounter that you have ever had?
Shooting rolls of film you forgot were already shot, and the surprise of the double exposures that results when they come back from the lab.

If your photos shown here could have a soundtrack of three songs, what would they be (song title & artist please).

If you could take your LC-A+ and a sack of film On The Road to anywhere right now, where would you go and why?
Well, I took it to Antarctica a couple weeks ago…but there weren’t many roads there. So I guess the next on my list would be Tasmania or Easter Island.

What was your thought process in taking these photos? How do you think they communicate the themes of Americana / Kerouac / the Beat Generation? What was your favorite part of On The Road?
This shoot was really just a time for my friend Ike and I to hangout and get out of the city. I was visiting SF for a couple days and we both wanted to go down to Half Moon Bay. It was a pretty linear translation of the of the movie and book. Since the characters and story surrounding On The Road are about adventure and instantaneous decision-making, Ike and I set out to do the same. My favorite part of the movie was the how well shot and composed every scene was.

What’s coming up on the horizon? New projects? What’s in the works and what’s on your mind? Who/what would you like to shoot next?
Returning to LA, Paris, the Big Island, and Colorado in January, so I’m on a plane a lot the next couple months. I have a bunch of cool jobs coming up before and after the new year as well that I’m anxious for.

Your advice to Lomographers and/or low-fi photographers?
Be curious and adventurous with a camera in hand and you can never go wrong.

In December last year James Wright, editor and creative director of So It Goes Magazine, went on a two-week trip to Sri Lanka, "a place so long on our bucket list, but up until then, as yet unvisited," he writes on the first of his three-part photo diary. Herein is the first of his series that chronicles his adventures, highlighted by a selection of breathtaking images of the Sri Lankan countryside and the locals, among many other images, captured with his trusty photographic companions: the Leica MP, Lomo LC-A+, and an assortment of films including the LomoChrome Purple.

5 Snapshot Moments on the Road

A road trip is a celebration of little freedoms. It’s a chance to break out of a rut and to be a little unruly. All the mischief may be off limits to the camera, so the things we do photograph need to serve our memory well: They must convey the relief, fun and color of our secret sprees.
