Moanalua Gardens: A Nice Place to Play

A private garden and park that offers a nice location where you can bring your family in or take in an event.

Located in the Moanalua area of Honolulu, and sandwiched between a school and the freeway, Moanalua Gardens is a sprawling 24 acre privately-owned park, but it is open to the public most days from 9 AM to about an hour before sunset.

Once home to Prince Lot who would later be crowned King Kamehameha V, the land was willed by Princess Pauahi Bishop to Samuel Damon in 1884. The park is now run by the Damon family estate and is a great retreat from the nearby massive condominium neighborhood.

Found on the property are beautiful sculpted natural benches;

The park is also famous for housing the Hitachi Tree, the corporate symbol for the Hitachi Corporation of Japan. A monkey pod tree with a distinctive umbrella shape. The company owns the license on the tree til 2016, and much of the park’s funding comes from the deal from what I have heard.

Once a year, the park hosts the Prince Lot Hula festival. This event brings Hula Halaus (schools) to compete and show off their talents. I have never gone as the park becomes extremely crowded. I have also known it to host tree climbing contests and a few other festivals.

The park is a great place to let your children run and play or take some pictures. The trees are large and shady. I have taken a blanket and book to waste away a Saturday afternoon. Many local camera clubs come to take pictures at the koi ponds or the stream that runs through the park.

    March Frenzy: Tottenham Takes Over the V&A

    I went to the Victoria & Albert Museum's Friday Late, an event that takes place every last Friday evening of the month. For March 2014, the London borough of Tottenham was invited to curate an evening of creativity. There were a number of events that went on ranging from music and art to fashion and film. Accompanied by my LC-A+ and Fisheye No. 2, here are my highlights of that evening in photographs.
