I never celebrated Dia de los Muertos before. Really, I didn't even know exactly what was being celebrated. I knew Dia de los Muertos when translated is Day of the Dead. I also knew the day was outfitted with lots of skeletons but any other details were beyond my knowledge!
I set out to really understand this Mexican holiday and tradition. Along with my Diana Mini and my La Sardina, I planned to capture the very essence of this holiday. Dia de los Muertos is a time to celebrate those who have passed away. It’s a time to celebrate the love and memories of our family and friends. Rather than mourning the loss of a loved one, on this day, we praise and rejoice them. It’s a time to say, “I’ll never forget you. I will always remember you!”
I attended the Annual Dia de los Muertos Parade at Central Market . Before I could even park my car, I could hear drumbeats. The rhythm and energy was pulsating through the air. I could hardly contain my excitement! I couldn’t wait to hit the parade grounds!
Immediately, I was in awe by the giant Day of the Dead puppets by Las Monas de San Antonio. At least 12 feet tall, stood a giant bride and groom interactive skeleton leading the parade. Following them were skeletons beating drums and dancing skeletons from Academicos da Opera, The Austin Samba School.
All the performers were wearing white and had ornate face paintings. Onlookers were moving and shaking, too! The music was so energetic and lively that everyone began to dance! At this point, I was completely enthralled by what was happening. Before I knew it, I was covered in sweat and applauding! Everyone was smiling and captivated by the celebration we just had for our loved ones. The party continued on with music from DJ Manolo Black. This party carried on through the night. I, on the other hand, walked back to my car completely inspired by what I had just experienced.
After experiencing this electrifying event, I am no longer a stranger to La Dia de los Muertos! In fact this will become an annual celebration for me!
