Mu Ryang Sa Temple

1

Tucked at the back of Palolo Valley lies a Korean Buddhist temple steeped in culture, complete with beautiful architecture and statues.

Last year, I had the opportunity to study at the Mu Ryang Sa Temple in the Palolo Valley area of Honolulu. I was not studying Buddhism, but Korean language.

The temple was constructed in the 1980’s in Palolo Valley. It is listed as the largest Korean temple outside of Korea, and constructed in the fashion of 5th century Korean architecture. From points of the grounds you are cooled by mountain breezes as you gaze down to the ocean. The institution offers education programs in Buddhism, Korean language and culture like calligraphy, dance, music, and tea ceremonies no matter your faith or background. It also offers care to the Korean elderly in Hawaii .

The grounds house some amazing statues.

The most striking of which and moved me the most is the Garden of Ji Jang Bosal.

The monks and staff are very kind and let me take pictures of their sacred buildings and grounds freely. You can too. Just be equally respectful. There is a donation box that could compensate them for your picture adventure. They have ceremonies all through the day and you may want to sign up for a class or two to learn Korean or Calligraphy.

    Nishe: Exploring Emotions Through Photography

There's a certain air of sadness in Nishe's portraits. More often than not, the faces of her subjects are either partially or completely hidden. Sad, yes, but undeniably beautiful. Melancholia, as well as loss of innocence and the pains of growing up, are recurring themes in the photographer's body of work and she presents all these quite gracefully.
