Celebrating a win does not have to be loud and fancy. Sometimes a simple fare shared is the best way to thank the winning team.
Working for a non-profit organisation, we do not have the luxury of expensive celebrations as every cent counts. But that does not mean that we can’t enjoy the fruits of our labor and hard work. To celebrate coming in second place at a national competition, a simple but heart-warming lunch was arranged for the team members — a gesture that was greatly appreciated by all involved.
The choice of location and restaurant for our team celebration was PUTIEN, located at Singapore’s Marine Parade. This restaurant group specialises in Heng Hwa cusine, which according to its website offers an oasis of simple indulgences amid one’s daily bustle.
The restaurant was chosen because of its simple home-cooked dishes. It’s famed for its PUTIEN Lor Mee, which is best described as noodles served with vegetables and seafood in a silky smooth and milky soup. Pleasantly unique was how it tasted. Naturally, we also sampled other restaurant favourites.
Yet, what I noticed about the restaurant was the ambience. Though the layout was designed to fit in as many tables as possible, the high and open ceiling made the place feel more airy and spacious.
Also, it had one private dining area, which is separated by a sliding door.
Heng Hwa cuisine is not as common as Cantonese cuisine in Singapore. That’s why this chain of restaurant is doing a roaring business. In fact, because of its quality yet affordable food offered, one would hardly be able to talk about Heng Hwa cuisine without mentioning PUTIEN.
While the organiser of this lunch did not reveal the real reason(s) why he chose this restaurant to celebrate our win, I do suspect it is because of the business philosophies that both our entities have in common. Both our organisations have to make do with what we have in order to be successful, and knowing the organiser, I feel that this is his key message – on top of enjoying a good meal.
