The Belair X 6-12 City Slicker: Daily Life in Hong Kong

2

I just received my first roll of Belair X 6-12, 6x6 developments! Here are some of my favorite shots, taken in and about my daily routine, to share with you eager readers!

My favorite photo by far is the above shot of Chatham Road South taken one brisk evening while on my nightly stroll. For some perspective, to the right are two of Hong Kong’s main museums – the Hong Kong Museum of History, and the Hong Kong Science Museum – as well as the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. What you see here is the start of the long stretch of shops and restaurants that continue for a little under a mile till the cusp of the Victoria Harbor.

It was exciting to play with long exposure, everything about the camera and shutter feeling so foreign. Whenever I take a long exposure shot of cars passing on the streets I look for a pedestrian railing or fire-hydrant to hold the camera steady on. This is what I did for the above shot.

Loaded with Lomography X-Pro Slide 200 120 film, the reliable yellowish undertones colored my indoor photos perfectly and served as accurate reflections of the mood. Above is the typical, late weeknight scene on the MTR – Hong Kong’s metro. It’s a rare and valued sight, an empty train.

What do I think of you, beautiful Belair X 6-12? Well, if the descriptive didn’t allude to my thumbs up, then yes, I give it as many thumbs up as humanly possible!

Before turning in for the evening, I like to escape the noise and energy as much as I can. The best way I’ve found is to visit my rooftop and watch the sky change color as the sun sets. Sometimes I get to see the large golden circle reflected on the skyscraper of a hotel next door. But this particular evening, I was mesmerized by the purply-pink cotton candy going on above my head which I’m happy was captured in the upper third of the above square, giving the dark outline of the buildings even more prominence.

You don’t have to be lucky to test the Belair X 6-12 as the limited-time 15% off regular price offer is still on! Take your own camera out as soon as your round of cameras are deployed as we’re offering free film with each Belair purchase till 29 November, 2012.

Please stay tuned for more test rolls coming in soon, which I’m excited for, and Follow The First Belair Testers On Their Maiden Voyage

When the Belair X 6-12 was introduced last year, I was pretty excited. A medium format camera with 6x12 size negatives and automatic exposure for a reasonable price, that sounds promising. More of my photos, experiences and tips after the jump.

A Fresh Start with an Old and a New Camera

In December, two new cameras came into my possession: from the bag of Sinterklaas, the Dutch Santa Claus, came a classic Minolta SRT100 with two lenses and a flash, and I also picked up the Horizon Perfekt that I had won in the "Eliza was here" rumble. By now the first rolls have been shot and developed!

What Art Can Learn from the Banal

Stephen Shore introduced to the 70s art world an unadorned image of American life. He captured littered restaurant tables as other photographers would immaculate vistas. For the opening of “American Surfaces”, he even taped unframed snapshots on gallery walls. In these videos, Shore talks about objects that have “no pretention to art” and the things he learned from Andy Warhol.

    Object of My Affection: Subbuteo

In my early adolescence, I liked to play table football. For my 12th birthday, my parents gifted me with a wonderful Subbuteo table soccer game set that I had wished for many months! This was my favorite toy until I discovered other interesting hobbies, like ham radio and electronics. So after some years, I gave away this game to other kids. I always remembered this game with pleasure and a hint of nostalgia.
