Midweek Movies: Goldfinger

1

In light of the recent release of Skyfall, the 23rd instalment in the James Bond film series, and the shining comeback and expansion of our Gold Edition cameras, this week’s featured movie is the widely acclaimed James Bond classic, Goldfinger.

Released in 1964 and based on the novel of Ian Fleming, Goldfinger stars Sean Connery as MI6 agent James Bond, Honor Blackman and Shirley Eaton as Bond Girls Pussy Galore and Jill Masterson, respectively, and Gert Frobe as the titular character and villain Auric Goldfinger.

Agent 007 James Bond is given the mission to tail gold magnate Auric Goldfinger, and uncover his wide scale gold smuggling schemes. After winning a high-stakes golf game and following the latter to Switzerland, Bond finds out just how Goldfinger does it, and hears talks about a certain “Operation Grand Slam” in the process.

While trying to escape the plant alongside Tilly, the sister of Jill Masterson (an employee of Goldfinger who developed relations with Bond and was subsequently killed earlier on), they are captured by Goldfinger’s henchmen. Tilly is killed and Bond is tied to a table, waiting to be sliced in half by an overhead laser.

Goldfinger spares Bond however, when Bond lies knowing about “Operation Grand Slam”. Not wanting to let the MI6 know that something was amiss, Goldfinger has Bond transported into Fort Knox Kentucky, flown by his personal pilot, Pussy Galore.

Bond finally learns the details behind Grand Slam, and after successfully convincing Pussy to assist in stopping Goldfinger’s plans, he informs the US Military. Attacks and fighting ensue, and as with all stories, the hero prevails. Goldfinger is thwarted, balanced is restored, and Bond, obviously, gets the girl.

I used to love Bond's movies (well, just the movies with Sean Connery), but about 15 years ago I discovered my dad's Bond's novels collection. I read the collection (five books I think) in a few days. I was amazed about the narrative skills of Fleming. Since then I can still enjoy a Bond movie, but I can't stop thinking that the novel is better in so many ways. I just read Goldfinger for the third time a few weeks ago.
Stop the movie and run to look for the novel.

Every year, just a few weeks before summer, I dedicate a series of photos to the joy of living outdoors in this good season. One of the most common pleasures is taking one's socks and shoes off to feel the first warm rays of sun on our pale feet, which were prisoners inside shoes throughout the long winter season. So, it's time to take off your socks and shoes and relax barefoot! Where? Of course, on the walls surrounding the beautiful lake! Take a look!
