The Texas Book Festival 2012

“A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading.” ― William Styron

Book Inversion Explosion

Right outside the front door of the Lomography Gallery Store Austin, The Texas Book Festival is waiting to rain books down on me! This past October, I got see the greatness of The Texas Book Festival for the first time. Loving the analogue lifestyle, I have a huge appreciation for the Texas Book Festival and it’s mission to encourage reading for all ages!

The Texas Book Festival is more exciting then it may seem at first thought. Besides the plethora of books, true to the Austin-style, live music is trumpeting all day long! Central Market is there providing live cooking class performances for anyone interested in spicing up their cooking skills! Even the quintessential fair foods had a presence at the festival. Jumbo corn dog, anyone? Or how about a fresh squeezed lemonade?

Now for the main attraction- THE BOOKS! There are tents filled with tons of books- One book, two books, red books, blue books, black books, blue books, old books, new books. Authors are even present for book signings and are available to answer any questions you may have. Part of the weekend festivities included author readings, panel discussions, and presentations.

I snagged two autographed Dan Winter books, The Last Launch and Icons and Ingenuity. Both are amazing photography books filled with some important and beautiful images of American history. I highly recommend checking them out sometime!

Thank you Texas for hosting such a great festival and for keeping the imagination and love for reading alive!

Happy Book People!

Estonian Intersections of Sight and Sound

Would you rather lose your vision or your hearing? As photographers, we might choose the latter without a second thought, especially while viewing the festival photos that photographer Mart Vares captured with the New Petzval 85 Lens. Still, who doesn’t love the pleasant mechanical shutter sound of an old SLR that makes us commit to analog photography? While following the Nordic delegation at this years Waves Central Europe, we caught up with the Estonian band, Würffel, whose songs leave us feeling equally delighted.

Coloring Outside the Lines with LomoAmigo Tim Kerr

We recently had the great opportunity to interview our latest LomoAmigo, Tim Kerr. While his repertoire stretches back to the late 1970's and includes that of musician, artist, painter, photographer, skater and many other things, he just prefers Tim! We gave him a La Sardina DIY, which he not only added his own style to, but shot some excellent photos with as well. Rife with candid and thoughtful answers, we expect everyone will glean a nugget of wisdom and leave with a smile.

Angela Izzo on Shooting with the Diana Mini, Photographing Musicians, and Then Some

While many of us can only dream of working with musicians and photographing them, Angela Izzo's job entails exactly that. Apparently, this is a fulfillment of her own dream that she had when she was younger. In this interview, Izzo talks about her beginnings which, of course, included going to as many shows and festivals as she possibly can; some of her most memorable on-the-job-experiences with the likes of The Doors, Lykke Li, Jack White, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Chris Robinson Brotherhood; her inspirations and other interests; and her love for film photography and Diana Mini. And to those looking into fulfilling their own dreams of working in the same industry, Izzo also shares helpful advice based on her own experiences.

One thing's for sure, though, it's the kind of experience that not many people share and—should one escape unscathed, like russellmcbride and his friend—a highly rewarding one at that.

William Helburn was one of the greatest ad photographers never quite known. His name remained anonymous behind famous ads for Coca-Cola, Buick, Revlon and Max Factor. He brought out the plush side of Kodachrome and surprised the American public with sexy humor. The credit is long overdue, but a recent book pays tribute to Helburn's vibrant career.

What's so great about analog photography? You never know what you will get in the end. Not every film let all of my photos look perfect, some fail, too. Maybe some of you experienced the same. After trying out several film soups and chemicals I finally discovered the easiest and quickest way: chlorine!
