City Museum, St. Louis - Summer Road Trip 2009 - Lomostop #10

City Museum is all kinds of crazy. I'm not even sure how best to describe it. It's not really a museum. It's more like a playground. And a funhouse. And an architectural masterpiece.

By now you know my story: July 2009, 8000 km road trip, 3 generations, 1 van. Crazy? Yes. Lomographically limited? In no way whatsoever! I took along 10 cameras and 40 rolls of film. We passed through 10 American states and 3 Canadian provinces, and wished we could have stayed longer in more than half of them…

City Museum is all kinds of crazy. I’m not even sure how best to describe it. It’s not really a museum. It’s more like a playground, a funhouse, and an architectural masterpiece.

The “museum” takes over the inside and outside of an 11 storey, 600,000 square foot, former shoe manufacturing building. It was designed by a sculptor, and is intended to make you say, “wow”. It does just that. It is full of reclaimed, recycled, and repurposed items from all over St. Louis. Chimneys, construction cranes, airplanes, shoelace manufacturing machines, a three-storey slide, a ferries wheel on the roof, and the world’s largest underpants.

There is also a circus school, and a thrift shop gift shop.

When I asked my son, minidirklancer, “on a scale of 1 to 10, how crazy was City Museum?” He answered, “ten-hundred-thousand”. He’s not quite that good with math yet, but you get the picture. We spent 3 hours there, and I’m not even sure we experienced half of it.

Plan to spend a whole day; you’ll be glad you did. (Not too far from the Arch) “Where the Imagination Runs Wild”
