Summer in Bulgaria: Shumen

This summer I was lucky enough to spend two weeks touring around Bulgaria with three other people in a brand new Chevy! Over the next few articles, I am going to share with you some of my photos from that trip, place by place. Shumen was a town that we took a day trip to from Balchik where we were staying.

I am not sure what made us decide to visit Shumen as I understand it is not a hugely popular destination for tourists and when we were there, we struggled to find people who spoke English, or menu translations and things like that. There is a lovely street in Shumen full of cafes, bars and restaurants and the first thing that we decided to do when we arrived was to get some lunch there as the journey had been difficult and a lot longer than we had scheduled!

After this, they were setting up in the town for some kind of Red Bull sponsored car race so we were unable to stay as long as we had wanted because our car was parked at the finish line. This didn’t stop us from taking a LOT of photos of this interesting concrete structure, which we are pretty sure is abandoned, but are not sure exactly what it was ever used for or if there are any plans to use it for anything again. It seems like a terrible waste of an absolutely amazing place.

There are some other amazing buildings in Shumen, some we got chance to photograph that day (as can be seen below) and others which we unfortunately missed due to not staying very long here. This does mean that I would love to go and visit Shumen again on a future trip to Bulgaria as it holds a monument celebrating 1300 years of Bulgaria, which I would love to see.

Lomography Day Trips: A Three-Day Bicycle Route Across Italy and Switzerland

I live in the North of Italy, near the border with Switzerland. I love to cycle in Swiss territory, because their car traffic is lower than in Italy and because there are nice bicycle paths free of cars and motorbikes. In this article I'll show you a nice three-day bicycle path that I cycled last summer. Take a look after the jump!

A Salute to the Masters: Un Paese, August 2014 (A Tribute to Paul Strand)

This is a tribute to a founding father of photography, the American photographer Paul Strand. In 1955, he released a book about Luzzara, a small town in central Italy, in collaboration with the famous neo-realist screenwriter Cesare Zavattini. To pay homage to this great artist, this summer I personally went to Luzzara to take a series of photos that shows the changes in this little town 60 years after the work of Strand was published.
