The Fun Fair at Como in Black and White

1

I don't know where is the Happiest Place on Earth... but every year I have a lot of fun at the fun-fair in my city, Como. Enjoy these series of photos. Some of these images were taken from the 50 meters high panoramic wheel!

The fun fair at Como is one of the most important in the North of Lombardy. Adrenaline rides, pretty and likeable small carousel for children, a giant panoramic wheel, and much more! When every year the Luna Park comes to Como for a month, I’m always in search of some new carousel, especially if they are breathtaking and extreme! I love the adrenaline rides, I really love flying through the air!

Who wants to get on the wheel with me? I did, taking with me my Canonet QL17 GIII loaded with an HP5 film that I developed in Rodinal R09 Spezial. This is an overview of the beautiful wheel (50 meters high) from where you can take great pictures! The panoramic wheel always has a great fascination to me … is a timeless classic that reminds me the legendary carousel at the Prater Park (Wien), where I make a ride many years ago…

And this is a great adrenaline ride… the “healthy” Delirium! Two rotation axes for a breathtaking ride… I love this carousel because is fun to see the faces of the people sitting in front of you!

You can have fun playing in the water on nice inflatable boats:

Or you can jump and do somersaults on elastic carpets

Some rides are really “timeless”!

Here you can see a beautiful panoramic shot taken from the wheel:

A beautiful carousel for kids: the use of a medium contrast black and white film allows me to obtain “timeless” photos!

The preferred carousel of my childhood … almost always I won a free ride! About 30 years ago, when the control electronics of the carousel was more simple than today, there was an easy way to win a round: it was enough (at the end of the run, before the final battle), to be the last who climbed in the sky!

Fun for all ages!

Happenings on Film: At the Start of the Tour of Lombardy with My Fed 3

Nothing Happens on Color Film: Street Life in Como As Seen From the Bus

Some weeks ago, I made a tribute to the great photographer Robert Frank and his 1958 black and white series taken in New York from a bus window. He is the master of the ordinary moments, capturing the essence of daily life in a series of free and random sequence of photos where nothing important happens! And as I've written there I wanted to take a similar experiment with color film, which would change the perception of the environment where people live. Read more after the jump!

My Day in Analogue: Lazy Summer Days at Home

Every summer, my soul screams for a lazy, hot day back at my parents' home, for some good food, relaxation, and catching up with childhood friends. This year is no different, so I went back down to my small hometown in the very northeast of Belgium to enjoy a perfect laid back day doing nothing and everything. And of course, I brought my analogue cameras along to eternalize all of these small but grand moments in life.

A Salute to the Masters: Buraco (A Tribute to Alfred Eisenstaedt)

Alfred Eisenstaedt was one of Life Magazine's greatest photographers, known for his ability to immortalize the storytelling moment of many public events in history. To write this tribute to him, I chose a subject that he photographed in different places and times: card players in public places. The photos in this article were taken at the Patronal Feast of my city Como, during a series of buraco's lessons held by a local card players club.
