To Russia with Love: Church of the Savior on Blood, St Petersburg

4

One of the most beautiful cathedrals in Russia. Church of the Savior on Blood has a long and troubled history. One could say it is a miracle that we can still go to St Petersburg and enjoy seeing it.

This Church was built on the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated and it’s dedicated in his memory. In 1881, as Tsar Alexander’s carriage passed along the embankment, a grenade thrown by an anarchist conspirator exploded. The tsar, shaken but unhurt, got out of the carriage. A second conspirator took the chance to throw another bomb, killing himself and mortally wounding the tsar. Bleeding heavily, the tsar was taken back to the Winter Palace where he died a few hours later.

Construction of the church began in 1883 under Alexander III, as a memorial to his father, Alexander II. Work progressed slowly and was finally completed during the reign of Nicholas II in 1907.

The architectural style used for this church could be called “romantic nationalism”. It more resembles Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow than any other church in St Petersburg. The Church contains over 7,500 square meters of mosaics (according to its restorers) more than any other church in the world. It was all recently restored after many years of decline and is simply a must see.

After the Communist Revolution of 1917, the Church was severely looted and damaged, it was almost destroyed because communists were claiming that God didn’t exist and that religion was created to brainwash the masses. Many other churches in St Petersburg weren’t so lucky though…

During the Second World War, when many people were starving due to the Siege of Leningrad by Nazi German military forces, the Church was used as a temporary morgue for those who died in combat, from starvation and illness. After the war, it was used as a warehouse for vegetables, leading to the sardonic name, “Saviour on Potatoes”.

It was reopened in August 1997, after 27 years of restoration, it has not been reconsecrated and does not function as a full-time place of worship; it is a Museum of Mosaics.

If you have the chance – go visit, and don’t forget to take A LOT of film!

    Changing Seasons: Durham in Autumn

Durham is a beautiful but tiny university city in the north of England famous for its amazing cathedral, which is one of Britain's best loved buildings. When I was studying at the university, I loved to go for crisp, autumnal walks around the cathedral and the river, kicking the leaves and basking in the golden glow of the season. The Lomography Redscale film perfectly captures the beauty of this time of year.

The World According to Herr Willie: Olympiastadion Berlin

The 2015 UEFA Champions League Final will be held at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin on June 6. It is a place full of history and is also the only football stadium with a blue track course. Some say it is the most beautiful stadium in the world, and I totally agree with them. But then agai,n I might be biased because it is the home court of my favorite team, Hertha BSC Berlin—my blue-white bloodline.

Lorenzo Antico's 'Final Shot' Presents Last Shots From 33 Films

A movie's parting shot is a crucial element in the sense that it could either make or break the lasting impression that it would have on its audience. It could either wrap things up quite nicely and leave viewers satisfied, or it could do otherwise. For many, it's often the first thing that comes to mind long after the final credits have rolled out.

Fresh From the Lab: Take Off Your Socks and Shoes - It's Summertime!

Every year, just a few weeks before summer, I dedicate a series of photos to the joy of living outdoors in this good season. One of the most common pleasures is taking one's socks and shoes off to feel the first warm rays of sun on our pale feet, which were prisoners inside shoes throughout the long winter season. So, it's time to take off your socks and shoes and relax barefoot! Where? Of course, on the walls surrounding the beautiful lake! Take a look!

I don't know many bands from Russia but one that I've been admiring for years is Motorama from Rostov-on-Don. With catchy tunes and adorable videos, they took my heart by storm and that of fans from all over the world. Because of their Russian origin, Motorama is of course familiar with Lomo products. Reason enough to let them become our latest LomoAmigos! Enjoy the interview with singer Vlad and check out their B&W photos, taken with a La Sardina Splendour.
