Psar Thmei (Central Market), Phnom Penh.

The biggest market in Asia when it opened in 1937.

Psar Thmei, or Central Market, is a large market located in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. Built in the beautiful art deco style, it was said to be the biggest market in all of Asia when it was completed in 1937.

Psar Thmei is in the shape of a dome, with four arms branching out into vast hallways with countless stalls of goods including gold and silver, antique coins, money exchange, men and women apparels, clocks, books, flowers, food, fabrics, shoes, souvenirs, fish, seafood, dessert, luggage and much more.

Construction on the market began in 1935. Prior to 1935, the area was a lake that received the runoff during the rainy season. Wet season flooding in the area around the market is a vestige evidence of the existence of the old lake.

The Central Market is currently undergoing an extensive renovation project which will be completed in 2010, but is still open for business.
