Analogue Inspiration with the Three J's!

What inspires you? Do you have a favorite photograph, song, painting? Here at Lomography Gallery Store Santa Monica, we are all inspired by analogue photography of course! That grit, that grain of a film photograph, there's nothing like it! So we interviewed three of our staff members( coincidentally all "J's") Jake, Jordy and Joe, and asked them to each share a favorite analogue photo by another photographer, then share one of their own. Check out the results, do you see any influences?

From contemporary to vintage, black and white to color, there’s plenty that makes our little analogue hearts beat!

First is Jake’s pick, this photo comes straight from the lomohome archives and was taken by fellow Lomographer arivindabraham

Jake writes, “I love film noir, so much. One of my favorite aspects of film noir is the blinds’ shadow cast across a room. The art of shadows is lost, I feel, with digital photography”

Check out one of Jake’s own shots, he describes it “This photograph is my favorite photo I’ve ever taken. To me, it captures the random harshness of everyday life while keeping a strict organic feel. This photo was no accident, it was taken very deliberately with the Lubitel 166+ on 35mm film and was meant to be a light streak test then turned into a work of art.”

Next up is Jordy. She chose a photo of fashion blogger extraordinaire Tavi, shot by photographer Petra Collins

Why does Jordy like it so much? She says"This also looks like it’s from a movie still – like some bad-ass, 70’s spy movie where this girl in pink sunglasses is a super-stylish, undercover, Charlie’s Angels type agent. I love the perspective"

Let’s take a look at one of Jordy’s shots, taken in Adams Morgan in Washington, DC:

About Lomography, and how it relates to her images, Jordy says" I’ve been shooting for many years now, and I’m constantly trying new things. Lomography has gotten me excited all over again about shooting film. Not only has it been made easy to bring back analogue photography, it’s encouraged me to break rules and break barriers with my photos. I’ve always loved capturing moments, and now there are cameras/films/techniques being brought to my attention that make it easier and more inviting with every photo. Even if my desire to shoot begins to die down, I can always find something new to experiment with to get me back into the swing of things, and I love it!’

That brings us to Joe’s choice, by the photographer Wiliam Claxton

About the photo, Joe tells us," I have always been a fan of William Claxton’s jazz photography and a huge fan of Chet Baker. There is something about this photo that keeps drawing me back to it. Like I can’t figure it out, which is what I think good photography is about. Wanting to look at a photo again and again, because there is so much depth."

For his personal photo, Joe also chose a black and white photo, which he shot shot near Downtown LA, as one of his favorite photos.

Now you know what’s been keeping us inspired. What about you? We’d love to see what you’re shooting! Share with us, or tell us about your favorite photograph or photographer!

    Solar Eclipses and Beyond

The skies were busy with magic today — or maybe it was just the solar eclipse that caused all that ruckus? Decked out in space-age goggles and other various sun viewing paraphernalia, groups of people gathered as the moon moved between the sun and the earth this morning across Europe. Only a few lucky folks witnessed the total eclipse, and here at Vienna HQ, the greatest moment of the partial eclipse happened at 10:45 A.M. and lasted only a few minutes. We stopped everything we were doing to join the sky watchers crew and share in this astonishing moment. Check out these brilliant solar-inspired shots to celebrate the occasion!

Considered a living legend in street photography, she likes to photograph daily lives of people, trying to capture the emotions she recognizes around her. Weiss like to photograph people of all ages but she especially loves to take photos of children, masterfully immortalizing their spontaneous gestures and emotions.
