One of the largest free arts festivals in the country, Artscape is held every summer in Baltimore, MD and is full of lomographic picture-taking moments.
It’s hot, humid and not fit to go outside on the east coast of the USA in the dead of summer, but Artscape, held every July in Baltimore, MD, is worth facing the threat of dehydration and heat stroke to see!
Held near the Maryland Institute College of Art and the historic train stations of Mount Royal and Penn, this street fair has blossomed over the years from featuring students and local artists to showcasing some of the best visual and performance artists from all over the country. A large stage features nationally known acts such as Blues Traveler, Dionne Warwick and this year, Cake. Several smaller stages feature local and regional music acts. All for the low, low price of FREE! This attractive cover-price attracts people from all walks of life. A day at Artscape truly gives the visitor a great sense of just who lives in Charm City.
Prepare to be dazzled by the wide array of artistic creations on display. You’ll see beautiful paintings in every size and price range, silk screened prints, photographs, clay dishes and pottery, sculptural works and drawings. This year the theme was very eco-friendly and featured tons of items made from recycled materials: jewelry made from bottle caps, broken tiles, old fabric and inner tubes, old belts repurposed as bracelets and watchbands, baby and child t-shirts made from adult t-shirts and sculptures and wind chimes fashioned from auto parts. But my favorite part of the festival by far is the art car exhibit and thank GOD I brought my Holga and Vivitar UWS and a few rolls of both slide and black & white film.
The art cars spring from the minds of some truly creative people who travel from various parts of the USA to display their masterpieces. Unbelievably, this year I saw the camera van, an old full-sized van covered with plastic and toy cameras of every shape, color and size. It really was a sight to behold!
Check out Artscape next summer in Baltimore, MD and don’t forget to load your favorite analogue cameras with plenty of film!
