With time travel being one of the most popular genres in literature and film, there have been many notable movies exploring the countless possibilities of going back or forward in time. Therefore, for this week's Midweek Movies, we bring you 6 of these films in celebration of man's fascination with bending time.
1. Back to the Future (1985)
A classic time travel flick from the 80s, this sci-fi adventure comedy film chronicles the amazing journey of Marty McFly, a teenager who gets sent back in time from 1985 to 1955 by accident. It has since become a pop culture icon and one of the most popular science fiction movies in history.
2. Army of Darkness (1992)
Another popular sci-fi comedy flick, this movie from the early 90s closes the Evil Dead Trilogy by director Sam Raimi. A man named Ash Williams gets pulled into a time portal by accident and lands in 1300 AD. After a series of troublesome events, Ash is told that the only way for him to get back in his time is to obtain the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis. However, he makes a mishap in his attempt to lift the book safely, causing an army of the dead to rise from the ground and wreck havoc in the medieval kingdom.
3. Midnight in Paris (2011)
We know this has been featured for Midweek Movies before, but, aside from being one of our Woody Allen favorites, it really has to be in this list for its really interesting time-travel premise. Successful but creatively unsatisfied Hollywood screenwriter Gil Pender gets the shock of his life one night during a drunken stroll in Paris. After getting inside a vintage car that pulled over beside him, he is transported into the 1920s where he meets meets many notable figures in modern literature and art, such as writers Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda, and Gertrude Stein, and surrealists Salvador Dali, Man Ray, and Luis Buñuel.
4. The Terminator (1984)
This James Cameron film, which famously stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, is another cult classic and well-known film from the 80s. In this sci-fi action flick, Schwarzenegger is a cyborg assassin sent back in time from 2029 to 1984 kill Sarah Connor (Hamilton). However, resistance fighter Kyle Reese also travels back in time to protect her.
5. The Time Machine (2002)
A recent adaptation of the 1895 novel of the same title by HG Wells, and its earlier 1960 screenplay, the 2002 film tells the story of a 19th century inventor who goes back in time in his attempt to alter the past events concerning the death of his sweetheart, Emma. However, he ends up traveling 800,000 years into the future, where mankind has returned to a primitive lifestyle and has split into two warring races.
6. The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009)
Last but not the least is the film adaptation of the bestselling debut novel of the same title written by Audrey Niffeneger. A rather unique addition to this roster, the 2009 romantic drama approaches time travel differently from the first five above. Henry DeTamble is a Chicago librarian who suffers from a genetic disorder called Chrono-Displacement, which causes him to involuntarily travel back and forth in time with no control over all the circumstances of his time bending journeys. When the 28-year-old Henry meets 20-year-old Clare Anne Abshire for the first time in 1991, she tells him that she has known him all her life, much to his surprise and amazement. As the two eventually fall in love, Clare struggles to build a life with the man she believes to be her one true love.
