On the last day of our vacation, we decided to spend it peacefully under the freshness of the trees in the Puerto de la Cruz Botanical Garden in Tenerife island. It was a long time ago since we last visited it, and we were sick of the heat and the beach already, we thought that it was the best option to forget about this hot August for a few hours.
The Puerto de la Cruz Botanical Garden was built by the Royal Command of Carlos III in 1788 with the intention of making it a place to cultivate species of tropical plants in Spanish territory, taking advantage of the excellent climate of this region for their cultivation. These tropical plants adapted marvelously in the Botanical Garden. As a result of this labor, all the species that became successfully acclimatized here were taken to other regions of Spain to check if it was possible to cultivate them, but in most cases, their adaptation could not be achieved.
It is a fantastic place to go for a walk and know all the species available in this garden. Going through its paths with the camera in hand makes the hours fly. You can sit on a bench and gaze at the leaves moving on the trees, watch the tourists amazed with the light and the colors, and why not, the children pointing at the carps and the turtles of the pond like crazy, while they show their heads to see if any crumb of food happens to fall…
The Botanical Garden, despite being located in the center of El Puerto de la Cruz, makes our minds travel to another place. All the species found here come from other regions of the world. The star specie of the garden is an impressive Ficus, which is more than 200 hundred years old and was brought from South America, with roots sticking out of the ground. It is a wonderful specimen.
The Botanical Garden is an excellent place to bid ‘goodbye’ to vacations and to recharge one’s energy for a new year. Now, I would like to make my next visit in Spring, so if you are around Tenerife at that time, be sure to let me know and we will take some photos.
