George Stroumboulopoulos a.k.a. Strombo is to Canada like Anderson Cooper is to the States! Most of us remember him when he first started off at Muchmusic, but now he is at CBC with his very own talk show. The Lomography Canada team attended one of his shows this past month - Read on for deets!
Strombo has been in the Canadian television scene for as long as we can remember. Reigning from Malton, Ontario, he studied Radio Broadcasting at Humber College. Starting his television career at Muchmusic in 2000, he hosted shows such as The Punk Show, the NewMusic, MuchLOUD and MuchNews. In 2005, he moved over to CBC where he hosted The Hour. Now called George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight , his show continues to merge news with celebrities and talks all things politics, pop culture, entertainment, sports and much more. We thought it would be super neat to check out one of the tapings for his show so off to the CBC we went!
As we piled into the set, we were lucky enough to get front row seats to the show. When everyone was seated, a comical fellow by the name of Fraser came out and did the usual audience warm-up. He was hilarious and we had a great few laughs before the filming began. George eventually came out to a round of applause from the studio audience. After doing a few promos, the first guest of the show came out – Paul Henderson! Some of you may remember him (and should remember him!) as the Canadian hockey player that scored the infamous goal during the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviets. The second guest was another famous Canadian by the name of Paul – Paul Shaffer! I was super excited to see The Late Show’s host David Letterman’s sidekick just a few feet away from us.
To end off the taping, there was a lighter segment called “The Panel”. This was super fun to watch as comedians Ali Hassan and Naomi Snieckus discussed their take on the 80s. Guest panelist and fellow CBC broadcaster Jian Ghomeshi was also on hand to complete the trio and provided some great entertainment, wrapping up a fantastic episode of George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight!
We hung around for a bit and got to chat with the TV host himself. Super down to earth and accommodating, George took a photo of us sitting on those iconic red chairs and we of course asked for a shot with him also. All in all, a great day at the CBC.
Be sure to check out George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight weekdays at 7PM on CBC!
