Lost Memories

6

Do all your film rolls have a happy ending? Did all your captures become an image?

This is an observation, a thought about all those photo compositions that failed to materialize.

Probably you already know what I’m talking about; that roll wrongly placed into the camera that you never developed, those imaginary pictures that remained imaginary, a poor job from the development lab, a wrong exposure, an inconvenient light leak…summing up: lost memories.

Lost memories for some, acquisitions for others.

For some time now I have the habit to ask to my lab if they have rolls that people left behind, or abandoned or, simply, that didn’t want to know anything about because the roll went wrong and they didn’t get the expected results.

I like to play with these rolls. Experiment. To test my inventions that later I’ll use with my regular films.

Here you have some samples of those experiments. Film rolls of strangers treated with bleach, stain remover, Indian ink, vinegar, paint…

The outcome: not a trace of their memories….

Here are some things you need to know before you do something crazy to your film. (This should be obvious)
    1. Learn to expose film correctly
    2. Shoot a few test rolls and learn how your film behaves with certain substances

THEN go and shoot precious memories with the guarantee of knowing the pictures will turn out.

I know all of these things. But I talk about films of other people.

Wow! Do you know what happened to the film of the 17th photo? Do you think the colors could be the 3 light sensitive layers?

Julian Hand is a film artist and visual projectionist for our latest LomoAmigos The Oscillation. He uses traditional analogue techniques to create swirling, trippy and beautifully tactile films and light shows. He uses Super 8 film, coloured inks, washing up liquid, soap and acetate to create these images and visuals. He embraces all things analogue! I brought an LC-A+, some 1600 ISO film and captured him at work.
