The Jefferson Hotel

2

This 5 Star hotel is one of the most grand hotels in Richmond, and according to their website (www.jeffersonhotel.com) one of the finest in the country. The same architecture firm that designed the New York Public Library designed the building, and the list of patrons who have stayed in the hotel are just as famous. “Presidents, writers, and celebrities (including The Rolling Stones, Dolly Parton, Henry James, and Elvis Presley) have all stayed in the Jefferson.” (www.wikipedia.com)

The building’s grand opening was on Halloween day of 1895 when the doors opened at 7am. People came from far and wide to see this spectacle, and many still do to this day. The famous life-sized statue of Thomas Jefferson, made of Carrara marble, by sculptor Edward V. Valentine is one of the many historical sights to see inside this building. Throughout the hotel are paintings, fireplaces, writing tables, and ornate ceiling fixtures from the collection of the man who commissioned the building: Lewis Ginter.

Just walking past this building you can tell how grand it is. The clock tower is easily 15 stories up, and the exterior of the building is just as ornate as the interior. This is yet another location that is sought out for wedding ceremonies because of its grand staircase just off of the main lobby. This hotel is also one of the few places in the city of Richmond where you can purchase “Virginia is for Lovers” stickers, t-shirts, shot glasses, and coffee mugs!
