Back to School: The Lutheran High School at Deák tér

I went back to my old school - this time I was allowed to shoot photographs during the lessons. I've always wondered what it would feel like to go back to school after graduating. Now I tried and it was quite an experience.

I graduated from Lutheran High School at Deák tér in 1996. When I contacted the headmistress, she was very kind and instantly agreed to let me in the school to take some photos. To make it possible to make daylight photos, I was allowed the take photos during the lessons – while the students were studying in the classrooms, I was walking around with my tripod and took my pictures.

It was worth going back there (not to mention the funny feeling when I realized that I am not expected to go into my classroom when the bell rang) – it is a really beautiful building. The school was built in the 19th century; it was originally a school for girls. After the Second World War, it was taken away from the church, and was only given back in 1993.

What makes the building really unique is the shaft going through the entire building. It sheds some more light on the corridors (most of the windows open from the classroom). It also makes one able to see the floors below – many times it is used as an actual means of communication between the students.

I really enjoyed this visit – it was a bit like time travel. During the breaks, when I was walking among the students, it was very hard to imagine that I am not a 17-year-old boy anymore, but an adult twice that age. However, visiting this place of my personal history filled me with some peaceful nostalgia, which still lasts.

    My Lomo’Instant Quick Tips

I backed the Kickstarter project for the Lomo’Instant earlier this year and was thrilled to receive it last week. I love how the camera naturally encourages you to experiment with its different features, whether it’s through flashing your multiple exposures with different colors or trying different creative techniques after your shots has been ejected. Here are a few tips from what I’ve discovered from playing with the camera so far (and a couple of tips I want to try out in future)!

    An Afternoon in Tagaytay Highlands

I have good memories of Tagaytay Highlands. There had been times when some of my friends and I would spend the weekend there, playing all sorts of sports and having our bodies healed in the warm and lapping jacuzzi pool. But those were distant memories. I was able to go back to this place, but only for an afternoon, and tried to remember the good old days.

    My Vinyl Paradise

“I would like to buy a jukebox.” I've said this many times, so 4 years ago my ex-girlfriend went to my home with a little package. "It's a present for you," she said. I opened it and found a 12" vinyl disc, the single "Woman" by Wolfmother. It was wonderful. "If you will finally buy a jukebox, you shouldn't miss playing this song," she said.

    Chemical Manipulations with the Lomo’Instant

Perhaps you’ve already had chance to try light painting, multiple exposures and long exposures with your Lomo’Instant, but what can you experiment with next? Well, that’s exactly the thought I had which led to giving this Tipster a go. I wanted to shoot Lomo’Instant photos which felt a bit “messier” than what I’m usually used to and to use a technique which would open up new possibilities with the kinds of images I could create with my favorite instant camera. Well, here I go!

There is nothing better than a photo shot at the perfect moment. Henri Cartier-Bresson's principle on "The Decisive Moment" is a principle that we should still follow to this day. A perfectly-timed photo creates impact, whether it's one of a friend jumping into the pool or a couple emerging from the ceremony on their wedding day. For this rumble, we want to see that breathtaking moment, shot at the perfect time. And you showed us what it's like to be on time.

Jonathon Keats to Unveil the Millennium Camera at the Arizona State University Art Museum

You might remember experimental philosopher Jonathon Keats for the CenturyCamera, his ambitious project which involved installation of 100 ultra-long-exposure cameras in and around Berlin, Germany "to continuously document 100 years of municipal growth and decay for scrutiny and judgment by future generations" between 2014 and 2114. But today, Keats goes a step further and begins yet another groundbreaking and unprecedented project with the Millennium Camera.
