Alley Katz is one of those venues that you can’t help but love. This two-floor wonder holds roughly 500 people and is one of the many venues in Richmond that supports local and national touring acts – no matter what genre.
Some of the craziest shows happen here, people have jumped from the top floor to the ground floor and crowd surfed, mosh pits form, sometimes it gets ugly but it’s all in the name of good solid fun (usually). Consequently, it’s one of the most run down venues in Richmond. It’s down in Shockoe Bottom, just off the 17th Street Farmer’s Market, and yes, it is located in an alley – 10 Walnut Alley Richmond VA 23223 to be exact.
The venue is covered in stickers and posters from years of different shows, there’s graffiti upstairs in the band’s green room/dressing room, and the bars are always stocked with PBR on both floors (if there’s no PBR in stock, it must be late in the night and it must be a packed house). It’s always a tough choice deciding whether to be on the top or bottom floor for a show, from the second floor you get a great view of the whole main floor, including the stage… but when you’re on the bottom floor you’re right in the action! I tend to hang upstairs for the early acts, and make my way downstairs later in the evening.
On August 29th Murphy’s Kids took the stage around 10pm and totally rocked the house down. Murphy’s Kids combine rock, ska, reggae and good times to create an absolutely unstoppable show, no matter what venue they play. If you ever come to Richmond, VA and you see that they’re playing, don’t hesitate to show up and rock out. If they’re not playing, check out Alley Katz any night of the week. You might even see DJ – Murphy’s Kids’ trombone extraordinaire – tossin’ pizzas or Reid – Murphy’s Kids’ killer guitar player (he’s super tall, you can’t miss him) – mixin’ sound out at front of house.
