Kay and Jing are the co-founders of the local fashion brand Daydream Nation. The fashion and accessories designed by them every season are always based on a certain theme and story. And what story have they crafted around their La Sardina DIY customization? We'll spin it for you after the jump!
1. First, could you tell us briefly about the theme of your La Sardina DIY ? What’s the concept behind it?
“Getting started with a blind-folded Sardine camera to see the world.”
To start out with, we tried out various materials on the camera. Then, we heard the call of the semi-transparent nuke colour fabric! In addition to that, Lomography’s sixth Golden Rule: “Shoot first, ask questions later” inspired us to put the camera into the stocking. By being incased in this material, it reminds us of robbers who cover their face with stockings. However, the reasons behind the conceptualization are different. While using different types of stockings to be the lens filter, we both loved the surprises that the blurry images brought to us!
2. Where do you usually get your inspiration?
Mostly from the little things in our lives. Materials, colours, textures, trips – particularly passionate ones. Seriously, anything around us could potentially serve as inspiration.
3. If you were to give this to your favourite artist, who would it be? Why?
The genius of the fashion industry – Hussein Chalayan ! Without a doubt, he’s this century’s fashion designer we admire the most. The main point is, he’s still alive! (This could be a good excuse to start a conversation with him!)
4. Could you share some tips or thoughts with all the DIY newbies?
You have to love things with up to 300% of your effort “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing” said Helen Keller and is our favourite motto! Dare to be adventurous!
5. Where, or on who, would you like to use your La Sardina DIY for picture taking?
If it’s possible, we’ll give this to that fish that inspired the design of this camera (the Sardine). And then, we would get to see things from its angle!
