Falling In Love With The Diana F+ (Again)

1

I'll be honest - I never had much luck with the Diana F+. I loved it the first time I used it, then it went downhill from there. I've been picking it back up recently, and well, I think I'm in love again!

The Diana F+ is a Lomography gem. It’s classic, it’s retro and creates some of the most beautiful photographs that I have ever seen. In my analogue experience so far, the Diana has never struck me with those beautiful results that I wanted, let alone 120mm film. After countless rolls of film that were fairly disappointing, I think I was close to giving up on this camera.

Recently, I decided to give it another shot, due partly to the influx of 120mm films I had lying around in my home. I had the film, might as well get rid of it. Not the best of mindsets, but little did I know that I would be thoroughly surprised and satisfied with the results!

I first took it out for an excursion to an annual carnival in my city. Ferris wheels, candy stands, crowds of people – the perfect place to get some shots. The sun was setting and the sky was clear. I didn’t spend too much time there, but I think I got a few decent shots.

To finish off the roll a few days later, I took my camera to a suburban heritage street and the pond nearby. I had spent the day with my friends, who also loved taking photos, so we walked around and got some neat shots. I played a lot more with the multiple exposures this time, and they turned out super neat! I’ve always wanted to do that kind of splitzer-type MX effect. I took one shot, literally turned the camera upside down, and took the exact same shot. I think it turned out pretty good! (See below)

Neat, right?

I also decided to shoot with 16 frames instead of 12. Of course, silly me, forgot to put the mask into the camera. But you know what? I ended up getting these really cool overlapping shots. I don’t know about you, but I liked them a lot.

Tells a story all on its own

After getting my photos back, I think I learned a few things. It definitely takes some trial and error, a bit of time and a lot of patience to master the Diana F+, but that’s part of the fun with using this camera, or any analogue camera. You just have to find what works for you. I think one of the biggest factors was that I let go of worrying about how the shots would turn out and just shot – just as Lomography has always taught me!

Well, I’m in love.

The Diana F+ is a new twist on the ‘60s classic cult camera. Famous for its dreamy and soft-focused images, the Diana F+ is now packed with extra features such as panorama and pinhole capabilities. Available in our Online Shop.

I agree with much of what you felt using the Diana+. I've found that I have the most fun just going places and shooting. The results are hit or miss but once you let go and stop worrying, the photos tend to come out better than when you overthink!

I’d only heard rumors of the Magic Tree. I had no idea if they were true and, honestly, I’m still half disbelieving of it despite the story I’m about to tell you. If you have faith in what I say, I’m grateful. If you don’t, I bear no ill will towards you. But either way, please shout out in the comments what secrets or sophistries you think I found through its twisting branches.

Summer Hot Spots: Blaavand, Denmark (Part One)

When I was a child, I regularly went to Blaavand located at the Danish west coast with my brothers and my parents. However, I didn't anymore when I grew up. But in 2012, we hit the road again. It was my first visit there in about 20 years. I took the chance and packed as many cameras as possible into my luggage. In this article, I'm going to present to you the photos I took with my Nikon F-501 SLR.

Fresh from the Lab: Silvia Precisa

Recently, I used my trusty Fuji Silvi. It may not be my all-time favorite camera, but I just wanted to use it because I kind of missed shooting with it. So I decided to look through my film stash to see what I could use with the Fuji Silvi. After much consideration, I ended up picking the old Agfa CT Precisa ISO 100 to get that classic blue tone. Silvia Precisa!

    My Lomo’Instant Quick Tips

I backed the Kickstarter project for the Lomo’Instant earlier this year and was thrilled to receive it last week. I love how the camera naturally encourages you to experiment with its different features, whether it’s through flashing your multiple exposures with different colors or trying different creative techniques after your shots has been ejected. Here are a few tips from what I’ve discovered from playing with the camera so far (and a couple of tips I want to try out in future)!

The Magic Yet To Come: Part 1

Here’s a random and rather mysterious tale for you folks. Just the other day, I was at a local bar with a few friends. It was much like any other evening; we were sipping a couple of cocktails, recounting our adventures, falling over ourselves with laughter and half-drunkenly meditating on the meaning of life (a scientist once told me it’s 42 by the way). But then something truly strange happened. Read on to hear my story and please make a comment with your guess at the end!
