As the Cindy Sherman retrospective goes on at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, four of SanFo's top drag queens pay tribute to the artist by reenacting some of Sherman's most iconic self-portraits. Also worth noting is the interesting juxtaposition of digital and film photos produced by Keeney + Law.
Our featured photography master for the week is Cindy Sherman, known for her highly-stylized self-portraits representing the evolving roles of women over the decades. A major exhibition of her work is ongoing at the SFMOMA until October 8 and it has inspired Keeney + Law to produce a series of Sherman-inspired photos starring San Fo’s famed drag queens.
Directed by Brooke Robertson, Sherman’s untitled photographs (#351, #355, #360, and #354) from 2000 have been recreated by visual artists, performers, and queer extraordinaires Fauxnique, Boy Child, Lil Miss Hot Mess, and Lady Bear. Looks like Sherman’s modern portraits have opened doors not just for women but now for the LGBT community as well. Find out more about the project from the San Francisco Bay Guardian.

Some photographers have an instinct for the unique. Whereas others aim to fashion the ordinary into a singular picture, these hunters are obsessed with what cannot be found elsewhere. They prize an exclusive scoop on architectural patterns, artisan quirks, and objects that stick out of an everyday scene. And when the photographers find them, they will twist and turn to get the most flattering angle. Only right for curiosities that beg to be shared.
