# Divide Your Likes into a Hundred! Rumble

39

The number of likes in our Community are crazy! Imagine reaching more than a hundred thousand of likes in less than a month? Insane, fellas!

That’s why in this rumble, we have decided to bring you the math! Yes, yes, it may be boring for some of you but it is actually fun! So how does this work?

Five top likers will get to win Piggies corresponding by the number of likes made divided by 100. Sounds complicated? Nope!

Ex. If you have made 2,000 likes in the span of our competition, divide it by 100, and that will be the number of Piggies you will receive. 2,000 likes / 100 = 20 Piggies! 1,500 likes / 100 = 15 Piggies! 1,000 likes / 100 = 10 Piggies!

And of course it gets higher! As long as you keep on liking!

We will choose the top 5 photo likers within a week. Good luck everyone!

1. bloomchen ·

*lol* there are likers that reach the 8000 mark within a weak. not too bad for them but anyway i don´t like the hardcore-liking because in most cases an album with 30 pictures is liked completely within 2 minutes so there is actually no time to have a closer look at the photo and to me this doesn´t really value the great photos that are out there and user took with a lot of effort sometimes.

2. eskimofriend ·

@bloomchen: WORD!

3. carlos_perezderozas ·

@bloomchen I'm eith you. I'm liking your comment. By the way, if you want to congratulate us: give us 5 piggies to all of us who active enough to deserve them.

4. schemerel ·

I agree. I don't want my photo's to be liked for the sake of getting piggies. It totally devalues the likes. I don't really get the point of these types of competitions (very much like the recent marathon thing)
I wish lomography would stop these silly competitions. They have nothing to do with photography/creativity whatsoever.

5. trincheiras ·

i agree with you guys, it's like high school popularity contest... no substance. and besides it generates another phenomena: the "thank you" complex, i just wrote about this week ( www.lomography.com/homes/trincheiras/blog/79391-the-thank-y… )

6. cyan-shine ·

Hahaha I have this week free, so it means I can engage again in a "like"-fest! But, I agree, these competitions are pointless. They devalue likes. And the 15th million likes thing was also not conclusively ended. Who got the 15millionth like? He/she was to be showered with loot and glory! :D

7. minchi ·

I agree with all. I HATE the likes competition

8. mephisto19 ·

i´d rather say pick ONE photo and write a blog about why you like it instead like i try with the ¨my photo of the day¨ blog posts. the like function i an improvement compared to the old site, but liking a photo there with copy and paste and in a private message as there was no other option meant that you REALLY liked the photo. also using new photos in the ¨selected photo¨ section makes them ¨popular¨ and show up on the front page instead of what people find by themselves and the COMMUNITY chooses. there are so many ¨old¨ photos worth to be ¨selected¨, so i agree with the comments on top DISLIKE this rumble. @bloomchen @carlos_perezderozas @schemerel @trincheiras @cyan-shine

9. bloomchen ·

@carlos_perezderozas @schemerel @trincheiras @cyan-shine @mephisto19 @minchi @eskimofriend i don´t know how the old page worked but me personally really like the "most popular photo last year"-feature (www.lomography.com/magazine/news/2012/08/24/most-popular-ph…). as i am less than a year around here it brings pics to my mind that i don´t know and so i get to know some other user or album. i think for newbies this is a very nice feature.
well, the marathon thing was just a fun-thing for the olympics and to some degree the community here has to be entertained and i think it´s pretty hard to come across with something that really has deep content. but the likes-rumble is something that is announced from time to time. but well, maybe because it´s about entertaining to some degree we should not take so serious even though i really don´t like it ;)

10. stratski ·

@mephisto19 @bloomchen @carlos_perezderozas @schemerel @trincheiras @cyan-shine
Haha, we should totally hack this competition by embracing mephisto19's idea: write a blogpost about a picture you really like and post a link here. The winners will be the people who's pictures we write about, they'll get extra likes knowing someone really appreciates their picture.

Extra challenge: pick a photo to write about that has less than 10 likes to begin with.

11. carlos_perezderozas ·

@stratski @mephisto19 @bloomchen @carlos_perezderozas @schemerel @trincheiras @cyan-shine
Ok, so after having read all of you I'm hesitating about some things. First of all, and the meanest: I, as I think we would all agree, didn't want to be mean to the community. I share my worry with @bloomchen about LIKES devaluation. Then, I must say that some of us need piggies to keep on with our Lomo quest. That's my case, and I'm going to admit it. I have things to pay, and responsabilities (a university, a flat, a dog,...). So piggies are my best chance to keep on with the business. As far as it gets now, I'm saving for an LCA. I lost mine irresponsibly, and want to get a new one. So I would stick in my day of liking until I reach 20.000 likes for 200 piggies, I can asure you.
In the other hand, I would like to join with @stratski. I find it a super idea. Some people's work is kinda hidden because they don't get selected or handpicked by those who lead the website. There is no space for all of us, true, and we cannot ask for more, as I thik they do a splendid job.
So it can be us who can promote such people (even though I'm far from some of our works).
Finally, I want to insist in thanking the website and community. I've allways felt like being incentivated and motivated in producing better pictures and lomographies. Competitions, rumbles, and prizes of the day are such thing that makes keeping this energy somehow. I know we could be more romantic and just do it for art's sake. But I think the idea of the website is so well designed, that it lets you be known be many people, as it makes you know new people.
Sorry for the long explanation.

12. djramsay ·

i have said this many times, i hate the fact that people like (macro??) tens of thousands of photos every month.
Why cant we give piggies to photos that are liked, rather than the people who like on mass?
If you look at the recently liked photos of the top likers it is quite obvious that they are not all great photos and are most likely not really being looked at by the liker.

The beautiful thing about Lomo to me is that I get half beautiful and half not very good photos in a roll.
Dont get me wrong, i like being liked but some of my best photos have never been seen

I prefer this
www.lomography.com/homes/djramsay/photos/16684665

but there are 130 likes between them, beauty in the eye and all that but i prefer honest feedback

sorry

13. djramsay ·
14. cyan-shine ·

I agree with @mephisto19 and yes, @carlos_perezderozas of course I am extraordinarily grateful for the community and the website and the incentive to be active (phat piggies), but the incentive should not devalue one of the main interactive functions. I admit I like like crazy to get piggies, because I am addicted to pork, but it doesn't mean it is the best way. As is, I choose individual lomographers that I admire (@mephisto19 you're next) and like their albums as a recognition of their work and contribution, but maybe there are other ways for such competitions like those mentioned above @stratski @mephisto19 @bloomchen @carlos_perezderozas @schemerel @trincheiras

15. cyan-shine ·

@djramsay excellent idea with the giving of piggies!
However, it could lead to people making fake accounts to hoard piggies, which is even worse :(
Still, there must be a way, maybe have two kinds of piggies, transferrable from rumbles and articles and non-transferrables like when first signing up or from giveaways to all the community like the periodic holiday piggies. As is, I sit in sessions and use the "Like and next" button, so I see all images that I like, but as I explained, liking in this context is more of an allover recognition than a punctual award for a single item, by necessity! And I am unhappy about it! I have been known to be a huge critic when necessary and I hope it does not affect my pork supply ;P

16. saidseni ·

People: Like only what you like! It's easy! :)) That's how I got my piggies for the Marathon, there were no fake likes! Sorry, but some of us need it! I do need piggies, there is no way I can buy films without them (Portugal, not central Europe... :/)... I wonder why nobody complains about Facebook rumbles, now that's pure discrimination! :P

17. stratski ·

@saidseni and others: don't worry, the more people here say they don't want to enter this type of competition, the easier it will be for you to win! I totally sympathise with the need for piggies to buy film...

Meanwhile, in your quest for piggies, you might want to like the picture mentioned in this blogpost:
www.lomography.com/homes/stratski/blog/80366-hacking-the-co…

18. stratski ·
19. cyan-shine ·

@saidseni hahaha don't get us started on the facebook votings!!!!!!!!

20. bloomchen ·

www.lomography.com/homes/bloomchen/blog/80367-hacking-the-c…

@djramsay @mephisto19 @bloomchen @carlos_perezderozas @schemerel @trincheiras @cyan-shine @stratski
@saidseni: i understand this and it is legitime to get piggies through all kinds of rumbles. no doubt. piggies are nice and to me too it is a part of the page that i like as i don´t have a big bank account. so it is a nice bonus for all of us.

21. carlos_perezderozas ·

@djramsay @mephisto19 @bloomchen @carlos_perezderozas @schemerel @trincheiras @cyan-shine @stratski
@saidseni
I think, guys, that in the end we all want to say the same, though we are doing it in a different way. By the way, I don't have Facebook. So you got a good point, @saidseni. Anyways, guys. Don't get stressed, lomo on!, and massacre with likes in need for piggies, or stick to pure LIKEHOOD. But don't like in mass without a sense. Peace, love, lomo, cameras, ACTION!

22. carlos_perezderozas ·

@djramsay @mephisto19 @bloomchen @carlos_perezderozas @schemerel @trincheiras @cyan-shine @stratski
@saidseni
By the way. Lets make a comparison. I have had a recent weird situation here. Two of my pictures were selected for the handpicked section. One of them got up to 130 something likes or so. If you were to enter my POPULAR photos, underneath this one, there is my favourite picture uploaded in my lomohome. Have a look at both, and let me know whether you would like one or the other.
1st: www.lomography.com/photos/16799516
2nd: www.lomography.com/homes/carlos_perezderozas/popular/photos…

PLEASE TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I mean it. I'm so frustrated.

23. carlos_perezderozas ·

I sustain my theory by the fact that both got 2 comments, while one got 125 likes and the other just 16... just weird.

24. cyan-shine ·

Well there are some lomographers where you just have to like every image because they r0xx0r: @mephisto19 @satomi @stouf @vicuna @japsix for example xD

25. kylethefrench ·

i like like contests, i usually dont like enough to win although i would like that, i do really like the likes though so I like that

26. trincheiras ·

@carlos_perezderozas i don't understand why it's weird... we who own the photos may have some connection with them that others can't see or feel. i liked the first one, and looking at both of them i will not say that one is better than the other, but i remembered liking it because it left something in my eyes, maybe its the cuteness, the hello kitty, the colors, the angle... or simply something i cannot explain. i like photos that can make me feel something, even if i cant explain it :)

27. pinkpix ·

I also hate these like thingies. Devalues the like button.

28. kneehigh85 ·

@saidseni - I totally know what you mean about needing piggies - I need them too. However, I think what the other people here are suggesting is that some of the top likers in such contests, just like all 30 photos in every album they come across, which is what devalues the likes and makes them a bit meaningless. I love to get likes on my pictures, but it doesn't feel so good when I put an album on and somebody immediately likes all the photos in under 60 seconds because they can't haven even looked at them properly.

29. djramsay ·

are we able to donate piggies?

30. artichekt ·

Well, the like button is already a bit meaningless because of he selected section.
This contest enforces the total devaluation of this button.
Anyway - I am here for fun, looking for and finding some inspiration, not hunting for likes and piggies.
@gizmonox Thank you very much ;-) (THAT'S A VALUABLE LIKE!!)
@bloomchen I am one of the speed-likers (WHEN I like, I do it fast!). Explanation: I open 50 photos in tabs, take a closer look at each one of them, close the ones I don't like - and like the rest at the end within 20 seconds. That effectively does save loading time - because I go and get a coffee in the meantime! ;-)

31. gabysalas ·

@all: Thanks for the comments and discussions on the likes situation. We have read what you have to say and we agree that likes should not be used to create an unwelcome feeling in the community. So, we have decided to cut the competition short, we will still be honoring the winners as of the ending time. If you have any further comments, feel free to contact me on my home! Lomo On!

32. mayeemayee ·

Hello everyone! Surprised by the sudden rise of comments but anyway here's what I have to say. :)

We put up like rumbles like this as to build Lomographers' interest at looking at more lovely pictures in the Community. We are well aware that not all photos uploaded in our website are viewed with utmost passion and this one is a push for everyone to do so.

As for the Piggies, these are little rewards we give users. We believe in the analogue love our Community has. And if one, for example, is only liking Lomographs just because of Piggies, then that is definitely a shame. We believe that the analogue love in our Community is pure and simple so let us keep it that way.

Anyway, thank you for all the comments! Will sure announce the winners of this rumble soon. Keep the Lomo love, fellas!

cc: @djramsay @mephisto19 @bloomchen @carlos_perezderozas @schemerel @trincheiras @cyan-shine @stratski @saidseni @artichekt @gizmonox @djramsay @kneehigh85 @minchi and everyone else who I missed. :)

33. jimjimm ·

@mayeemayee
being a newbie to lomography..i find that these rumbles are not too bad actually..in the few that I have participated, I have been exposed to some excellent work and very inspiring...and got to know more of the community...so..i like the rumbles..:)....don't mind the piggies of course..!!!..:))..
...its almost like a refresher program....get exposed to a lot of work and some great great skills....
and yes...it is upto to the individual how to do the rumble...there is always going to be the other stories as well....
I for one would surely like more of the rumbles to roll!!!....

34. hervinsyah ·

@mayeemayee : What happen with the rumble, I thought it ended in one week? Hmm, ok, I understand. Maybe next time it's most favorite blog turn to get piggies or most favorite walls, etc.

35. mayeemayee ·

We had to cut it short due to the raise of comments, @hervinsyah. :)

36. saidseni ·

@stratski: Aha, that's a good point! @kneehigh85: I do understand what people are saying, I just find it odd that in this world where everything is about popularity and like buttons, this is still an issue... True likes or not, that's not how you know if your pictures are good. I also get likes on pictures I'm sure where not loaded yet, it's absurd, right?! :O Anyway, my final say is... piggies for @carlos_perezderozas and @saidseni for compensation of all that facebook rumbles! :P

37. carlos_perezderozas ·

@saidseni Many pigs!!! Many!!! WE DESERVE THEM!!! Lets demonstrate and fill the streets with adds telling people they should vote for us to get piggies!

38. cyan-shine ·

@mayeemayee when will the winners be announced?
