Workshop Highlights: Bokeh Dreams with the Lubitel 166+

We introduced a group of Lomographers to the concept of Bokeh, and how to use the Lubitel 166+ to create beautiful photographs. The Lubitel can do so much it's insane to think of all the possibilities!

What: Workshop name – Bokeh Dreams with the Lubitel 166+
When: Saturday, August 18th
Where: Lomography Gallery Store NYC
Camera: Lubitel 166 +

Bokeh is a more advanced technique, but definitely not out of reach for any fan of the Lubitel 166+. Bokeh is when a photograph has very shallow depth of field, and only one party of the image is in focus. It takes a little time to get a hang of the focusing, but once you do, the results are gorgeous.

We had a great group on Saturday learning the Bokeh technique. After getting the hang of how to manipulate focus we headed to Washington Square Park and tested our knowledge. We had a lot of fun and we can’t wait to see everyone’s photographs!

This is not an accurate description of what Bokeh is. All this article describes is shallow depth of field but Bokeh is actually a manipulation of light (often creating points or dots of light in the background of the photo) through the use of shallow depth of field. Without the light blur it's not really bokeh.

So here’s what we’ve been working on: an all new

For the last year we've been working on the next version of Lomography. We based our work on the feedback you’ve given us over the years and we wanted to share it as early as possible with you and can’t wait to hear what you think. Just one warning first: it is still in development and things can break. All the photos, comments, likes, homes and everything else were transferred as of October 16th, 2014. So anything you do on won't be reflected on and vice versa. Once we are done with testing, everything you did here will be deleted again. So this is a big playground for you to explore.

Geoffrey Berliner On Photographic Processes, Old and New

Geoffrey Berliner is the Executive Director of the Penumbra Foundation and the Center for Alternative Photography in New York. As the head of an organization whose goals are 'to be a comprehensive resource for photographers at any level' and 'to continue to publicize the impact photography has had and continues to have on culture, history and the arts,' his exposure to photographic materials -from 19th century gems to modern equipment- is so extensive, one cannot even begin to fathom just how much knowledge and experience this man has acquired. His collection of over 2000 vintage Petzval lenses is unparalleled, and the object of envy of both traditional and contemporary photographers. Although such lenses are reputed to require a certain level of skill to be used, Berliner seems to manage them with so much ease, producing splendid results.

    Tipster: DIY X-Pro Redscale

Browsing through the Lomography website, you can find a lot of redscale shots, which are all done on color negative films. I asked myself if it’s possible to redscale a slide or chrome film and then cross process it. (And yes, it is.) In this tipster I’m going to teach you how to create the bloodiest homemade redscale film I've ever come across.
