Around Europe With the Eyes of a Fish

2

Three friends, nine juggling balls, three special ticket trains, some films and a lomo fisheye. What does that mean? Interrail (or madness).

So this summer me and two of my best friends decided to take it to the next level and become travelmates. And the decision about what to do was quite obvious: interrail.

For those of you who are not familiar with this kind of trip, well, long story short, it’s an adventure around the europe, going from city to city just by train with a special ticket (the interrail global pass) valid only for a limited period of time. For those of you who are familiar with this madness, you may already know how crazy it can be.

So, 22 days of validity and 10 days for travelling? Doesn’t sound so bad. Well at least we thought so before starting the trip, so we checked some trains and decided to go visit Wien, Praha, Munich, Berlin, Kobenhavn, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Paris. Quite a lot of cities, as we discovered, but a lot of fun.

During the trip I came to know about the excistence of something like a toy-looking camera, and I didn’t take it really seariously at first (Wien, in a shop inside the museumquartier), but, as I saw it like, everywhere, I started to think that it could be something really cool. And checked out for it. So here they are, some of the photos I took in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, as I bought the fisheye camera only in Amsterdam (I still regret not having bought it back in Wien…).

Most of the photos show how tired we where as the end of the trip was near, but some of them are just about how we enjoyed it. And as we are three jugglers, we had some real fun juggling around and taking photos and videos of ourselves and other curious people gathering around us….

So, what to say about this adventure? Just try it, because it’s just way too cool and it gives you lomographers quite a lot of places and situations to get inspiration from. Or just point and shoot everywhere.

I am a Mad Analogue Scientist: New Experiments with 35mm Films and Chemicals

Unfortunately, it happens sometimes that your resulting pictures are not what you expected - the image doesn't look that good, the colors are bland, and the subject is banal. Indeed, it couldn't be picture of the year! Herein I propose a second chance for your pictures by modifying your 35mm negatives. Just pick up some ideas from here, experiment, and scan your negatives with the Lomography Smartphone Scanner. Anything is possible: burning, scratching, putting on hydrochloric acid, balsamic vinegar, nail polish, bleach, or raspberry juice... use your imagination and write down your new film soup recipe! You can find a sample of the effects in this article.
