Between the cities of Rio de Janeiro and the sister city of Niteroi, there is a bridge. The name of that bridge is “Presidente Costa e Silva” (Costa e Silva President). But it´s well known as “Rio-Niteroi Bridge”.
Built in 1974, all in concrete, the bridge have 135 thousand vehicles passing through it every day, and allows the travellers to appreciate the beautiful view of the Guanabara Bay, and touris points like the Sugar Loaf, the Maracanã Stadium and the Christ the Redeemer Monument. It´s possible to see airplanes landing and taking off the Santos Dumond Airport, that lays at the border of the bay, as the many fishing boats, ferryboats, and freighters that cross under the bridge. If one have some luck, he can see some oil platforms being build at the Rio de Janeiro Docks, or the military vessels at the Navy base that lies under the bridge´s end, at “Ilha da Conceição” (Conceicao Island), close to Niteroi.
The view is really astonishing, mostly at morning and sunset, when is possible to see the bay glowing red, blue or green. Recently I passed through the bridge with my Diana Snowcat loaded with a Lomography Color 35mm 400 ISO film that resulted in beautiful bluish-green images taken from the car in movement.
For those who live in Rio, or those who will come to visit the famous city, I recommend you to travel by this 13 kilometers elevated highway for the most beautiful views at the both sides of the bridge.
