The ExCel Centre in the East of London, has been a really important part of the London 2012 Olympics. Read on after the jump to find out why.
When I got my tickets through to the Olympics earlier this year, I was a bit disappointed to find that my tickets would take me to the ExCel Centre, rather than one of the sites in the actual Olympic Park in Stratford as that is the part I had been really interested in. However, last weekend on the actual day of my event (I wasn’t competing!) I had a great time at the ExCel Centre and here are some of my shots from the day.
The first thing about the ExCel Centre is that it is accessed via the Docklands Light Railway, which I had never been on before and it is a great journey as I feel like I miss out on a lot of London by being on the underground. The DLR is a little slower (I think) but the views are great and it takes you round some of the sites in London I see less of (the quays, Millennium Dome etc). When we got there, the atmosphere was fabulous and there were huge crowds of people making their way to the ExCel around the same time as us. When we got there, we were a little early for our event, so there was a lot of time to photograph the interior and exterior of the building.
The ExCel is hosting several of this year’s Olympic and Paralympic events, including boxing, weightlifting, judo, and table tennis amongst others, and I was lucky enough to see the women’s weightlifting +75kg, which was just incredible and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Also, with this being outside of the Olympic Park, there was an opportunity to hang around after and spot some of the athletes. You can read more about the weightlifting event in my News article.
Depending on where you are in the ExCel Centre, if you exit via the back entrance and cross the river, not only can you experience some excellent views of the river and the Millennium Dome, you can then come to a really interesting area where there is an array of food stalls, clothing stalls, and somewhere you can watch the sports action on a big screen.
