The Bourghiba Mausoleum

1

Some weeks ago I stayed for a week in a resort in Tunisia near Monastir. A city rich in history and interesting monuments. All the photos in this article were taken with my trusty Lomo LC-A camera! Read on!

Monastir is a city on the central coast of Tunisia, 20km south of Sousse and 160km far from Tunis. This city was built on the ruins of the Punic-Roman city of Ruspina, and was traditionally a fishing port. In the last thirty years, with the growth of tourism, its governatorate became a great touristic place!

One morning in July, I took a taxi to reach Monastir from my holiday resort, situated 8km north, in the locality of Skanes. When I entered Monastir, I saw a great avenue, directed towards the Bourghiba Mausoleum. With my trusty Lomo LC-A I took some photos:

The Mausoleum was built in a style that remembers the architecture of the Mosques, and it is the burial place of former President Habib Bourghiba (1903-2000).

The entrance is free and inside you can see his grave and some personal objects and photos of his life.

Outside there are other buildings and memorials of Tunisian soldiers:

On the other side of the road there is an Islamic cemetery. The burials are all directed towards the Holy City of Mecca:

On the background of the cemetery you can see the Ribat, an eighth century fortress, that had a starring role in Monty Python’s comedy ‘Life of Brian’.

A few steps outside the Ribat there is a wonderful garden;

and the Big Mosque of the city:

Walking towards the Mosque you’ll reach the narrow streets of the Medina:

Here you can find many shops with local products and souvenirs. A small city, very pleasant to visit!
