All across the US, temperatures have been soaring. Grand Rapids has been no different. When thermometers started reading in the triple digits, Cole and a few of her friends decide to escape the city in favor for a cottage on the lakeside!
Grand Rapids has plenty of parks to escape to when you need a break from the sidewalks and paved streets. But my favorite thing about this city would have to be this: you can drive fifteen minutes in any direction, and suddenly find yourself in the gorgeous nature that is pure michigan. To the west, we have the Michigan Lakeshore. To the south, we have some wonderful rural landscapes. Go east, and you can find yourself in Grand Ledge (home to some of the oldest geology in the lower peninsula!). I chose to go north, about an hour, to Wolf Lake.
My long lost friend who now lives in Houston, Texas, came up to visit for a couple weeks. He stayed with us in Grand Rapids for a week, then we headed up to his family’s cottage. The lake is a gorgeous place. I’ve been there before, but fall in love with it all over again every visit. Just up the road, is the location of Wolf Lake Ranch , which he has worked at many summers before. It is a wonderful place.
Once we got there, we set out to find some wood for campfires. After a walk through the woods, we discovered we didn’t know where the axe was! The men were quite innovative, and used a forked tree to break the firewood down into proper logs.
As the sun hung high in the sky, we started to feel the heat. There was only one answer to that problem; jump in the lake! The water was a perfect temperature.
That weekend, the local county had a fair going on! And not only a fair, but a flea market as well. There were so many vendors! It was a lot of fun to walk through the tents and look through all the things people had collected. A few of us bought some new treasures. But the wind brought us the smell of the food carts. We gathered ourselves and headed over to sample the fair food.
After filling ourselves with ox burgers, nachos, french fries and elephant ears, we decided to check out the rest of the fair. The rides were a tad expensive, so only a couple rode any. They were fun to look at, though! The colors were incredible. I loved watching people play the games. The carousel was my absolute favorite.
The night ended with fireworks. We went back to the cottage, built a campfire, and talked long into the night. It was so much fun. It was hot, but it sure helped me beat the heat! I hope we can go again next year.
