Sun Thrift Store: Possibly the Greatest Thrift Store in the World!

7

One is not supposed to share wonderful thrift stores, but this one is such a grand, dusty, funky-smelling adventure that I must share for the sake of Lomography!

The Sun Thrift Store is a charity store benefiting the Catalyst Foundation for AIDS Awareness and Care. It is absolutely vast and remains blissfully unaware of any trends, having rather random but very low prices with Wednesday and Saturday at 50% off before noon and senior discount Tuesday. There is also a daily colour tag
special. People bring in donations constantly and everyday their trucks are bringing in donations of entire estates.

As you enter, you are struck by the sheer size of the place, and then by the funky smell. They never pre-wash before selling, never have and never will. Much of my clothing, shoes, and hats were bought here through the years, just washed, sprayed or dry-cleaned before wearing. Almost half of my camera collection comes from Sun Thrift Store: Yashica Microtec Zoom 70 for US$6.99, Nikon Zoom Touch 500S for $3.99, Minolta Explorer Freedom Zoom for $4.99, Olympus AM100 for $2.99, Yashica Electro 35 GSM and Lomo Electra 112 both for $45.00 after much haggling. They want more for metal cameras. They sell toy cameras, some new in box, for $1.49. I have a few for giving away. Some of my dishes, appliances, and decorator things also came from Sun Thrift at very low prices. Everything is priced for fast turnover.

Hey Herb! I would love to visit this place! Thanks for the article. However, my mother hates thrift stores, so I probably wont take her!

Looks like fun. I go to Salvation Army and Vincent St. Paul stores and find lots of good stuff. Save a lot of money on clothes.

haha, I never see that many cameras when I go there.... probably because you're buying all of them! Well, there are a few other good thrift stores in the east valley, but I'm not going to reveal my secret spots!

@monodistortion The cameras in the article are pretty much all I've bought there, I have too many, now. You just have to haunt the place and check often, and there is another store near Lankershim and San Fernando Rd. Keep looking.

I have found some good cameras in Valley thrift stores, just not that one. A few months back I visited a bunch of thrift stores and found a Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim ($5), Ricoh FF-90 ($5), and Polaroid Automatic 250 ($30) but I'm normally not that lucky. I have enough cameras to keep me busy now but I'm always on the lookout for new finds!

    Eugenia Loli's Surreal Collages

In the hands of those capable wielding it, art can be a powerful weapon. With it, for one, creation of fantastical realms far removed from the one we live in is entirely possible. Through collage making, Eugenia Loli builds such worlds that invite the audience not only to marvel at them but also, and most importantly, to see through the hodgepodge of images to find meaning and formulate interpretations.

The Phobia Post: Fear of Solitude

It is possible to fear solitude. But of its many forms, I only fear the kind that goes unnoticed, the one you cannot share with other people. Photography, with its end goal of being seen, helps ease this kind of solitude.

Photo Stories: Away With You by lomomowlem

It is clear from the wild variety of photos in the website that Lomographers will do just about anything to get a good shot. Some swap rolls with friends overseas while others concoct unheard-of film soups. And then there are the masters of operations, the ones who spy and crouch their way to a share-worthy picture. This is one such story.

Black and White Photography: The Forms of the World

Colors may be amped to look unreal, like nothing of this world. Shots may be doubled, cross-processed, post-processed, mixed up into collages. The possibilities are infinite, yet some photographers still prefer black and white. Even in 2016, it is an ode to classic values of precision and balance. Light and shadow must be one pleasing dance. And just like in a well-choreographed piece, forms are obvious or playing coy. It all depends on how you're looking.

The World According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.
