I love the big city, but after spending weeks and weeks in a basement office, staring at a computer screen, there is nothing better than packing a backpack with some food and my tent, and going out into the great wide open. With hardly another soul in sight, you see the sun set over your tent and smell the early morning dew.
Sometimes life can be a bit of a drag. I love my job, but sometimes it can get tedious. Day after day the same view of the same office, the same people, the same window…
When it gets all too much for me, I pack my bag and get out into the great wide open. There is nothing like some wilderness to get away from the humdrum of daily life. A tent, some food, a few friends; sometimes that’s all you really need in life. It’s so great to sit in front of your tent and just listen to the sound of the wind in the trees, birds singing, a little creek. Even the buzzing of insects, which at home would drive me crazy, turns into a nice, soft, background music.
And let’s not forget the smells! I think my favourite smell in the world is the smell of a field in the summer: the mix of dry grass, flowers and sunshine (does sunshine have a smell? I think it does..).
If only we could take pictures of smells (smellies?). When it comes to smelling the outdoors, a bit of rain is also nice. A light shower brings out all kinds of new smells. Camping in the rain has its own charm. I love falling asleep to the sound of the rain on my tent.
Camping out in the winter can be fun as well: the sound of snow falling on your tent is soft like cats’ paws, the cold outside makes me appreciate my lovely warm sleeping bag, and everything looks different and new when it’s covered in fresh snow.
But the best time to go camping is summer, of course. When it’s nice and warm outside, and you can feel the grass under your bare feet or cool down in a mountain creek. When I close my eyes, I can already smell the sun on my warm skin…
