An Escape from the City: My First Sunbath of the Year

Escaping the city for a weekend in the beginning of June to take my first sunbath for the year! My first weekend of June was an occasion to leave my city and go to the Ligurian Sea, the nearest one in Como. After a stop in the town of Noli for lunch, I reached the city of Alassio, an interesting place with a medieval center with narrow streets, called "budello".

In the morning the sky was cloudy and the temperature was about 20 degrees Celsius, but in the early afternoon, the clouds disappeared and there was a good opportunity to take a sunbath on the beach.

A great moment to “throw away socks and shoes into the sea” for a pleasant barefoot walk on the beach! But… damn! The water is still cold! So as for this girl, I cannot make my first swim of the year!

The bathing season was already beginning and some workers were still putting up some beach signs.

The flowers of the Ligurian Coast are always pleasant to see! Not far from Alassio, there is Sanremo, a city known for its flower cultivations!

Almost everything is ready on the beach for the summer season!

A pleasant afternoon on the beach with a few sunbathers!

Because Alassio is an expensive town, in the late afternoon I journeyed a few kilometers to reach the small town of Laigueglia, a quiet place for a short walk and for some crepes!

Just before sunset, I found a hotel in Andora, a city built mainly in the ’60s. After a pizza with my friends, I took a walk along the sea with my trusty Lomo LC-A, taking some night pictures of the beaches.

The film was a Kodak Colorplus (200 ISO) so I placed the camera on a wall to avoid blurring. And because I love street photography, I propose to you this photo:

There are two young lovers…the photo was taken from a great distance to respect their privacy (their faces are not identifiable).

But take a careful look at some details: as you can see, the girl had taken off her shoes, while the boy is still wearing his! I wonder why girls are always the first to take off their shoes to enjoy the pleasant sensation of being barefoot on a beach or in a park? It is not the first time that I noticed this detail, the same situation occurs with my female friends when we are together in a beautiful park!

Maybe because girls have a bigger desire for freedom, enjoying pleasant sensations even from these small things? After all, it is they who can give us joy when we are a little discouraged!

A Salute to the Masters: Swing Festival in Como (A Tribute to Alexey Brodovitch)

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the publication of one of the most influential photography books ever, "Ballet" by the photographer, art director, and graphic designer Alexey Brodovitch. Brodovitch took a series of photos of classical dance in a very unconventional way, using very slow exposure times, trying to catch the true essence of Russian ballets. For this article, I took a series of photos at the Swing Crash Festival in my city, Como, held in June 2015.

My wife and I suffered a family loss in October 2013 so we decided to shift things around and have a celebration of life—a wedding, actually—to associate our loss with the beginning of something positive and memorable. We have been together for nearly 13 years and after getting married, we headed off on a three-month trip to South America and a few other stops to complete a round-the-world loop back to Australia.

A Salute to the Masters: R.I.P. (A Tribute to George Krause)

This article is dedicated to the multifaceted American photographer George Krause and to his series depicting funeral monuments realized between 1962 and 1963. I was able to know about this series thanks to an important essay on photography written by former Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Director of Photography, John Szarkowski. For this tribute, I loaded my trusty Praktica camera with a roll of Ilford film and took a series of photos in the Monumental Cemetery in my city, Como. Take a look!

Caleb Savage: Into the Darkroom, Out in the Open

When asked to recall the moment they first became truly interested in photography, most photographers would remember the magical feeling of picking up a hand-me-down or secondhand camera, the thrill of shooting an entire roll through, and the elation upon seeing and holding their first ever set of photographs. Caleb Savage, however, had quite a unique experience. At 10 years old, he had his first taste of working in the darkroom making prints at Boy Scout camp, thereby beginning a more than a decade-long affinity with photography.
