1. Describe your first memory as if it were a still photograph
Dark patterned carpet, lots of orange. An open fridge, viewed from close up at about eye level with a toddler. A stream of urine is arcing towards the vegetable crisper.

2. What’s one quality you wish you had?
The quality of independent wealth.

3. Who or what was the first thing you fell in love with?
What: bacon! Who: the girl who lived across the back alley from my childhood home.

Photos: Justin Craigen

4. What would you rid this world of in a heartbeat?
Lawyers, politicians, bankers, economists, misogyny, racism, poverty, hunger, heartache, the band Coldplay, credit and debt based economic systems, house flippers, stubbed toes, dental problems, religious fundamentalism, social conservatism, anyone who embraces neoliberal politics & economics, small yappy dogs, Hummers, Crocs, Uggs, underwear, pants.

5. What decade in history would you like to step into and why?
The last half of the 1960s and first half of the 1970s. Or, 1954. Very interesting cultural shifts were crystallizing then, and I would love to be able to observe it first hand. the 1920s are also appealing…jazz decadence…sexy, very sexy.

6. If you could hang as a camera around anyone’s neck, who would that someone be?
Me. If that’s not allowed, my friend Kris. If it has to be someone I don’t know, children from economically depressed areas or developing countries.

7. Where’s your secret garden, where you can escape to?
Victoria Park—a small, not very gorgeous park in the heart of downtown Regina. Too many drug dealers and drunks from the nearby bars, but it’s a special place for me. Also, my great grandmother’s ashes were illegally interred in a flower bed there. Up yours, city hall!

Wascana Park—a decent park surrounding a manmade lake. It’s bigger than NYC’s Central Park, and a great place to walk around in and get a little (if artificial) distance from the city.

8. What famous person (dead or alive) would like to have a drink with?
Ed Land, Kurt Vonnegut, Robert Redford, Amelia Earhart, Patti Smith, Gord Downie, Michael Stipe, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Wolfgang Weingart, Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and a few others. Why have a drink with one person when you could have a party with lots of fantastic people?

9. If you could no longer see, what’s one image you’d like burned in your mind?
My friend Kris smiling & dancing.

10. Who’s your hero, in fiction or in real life?
Kris Brandhagen – a fiercely talented multimedia artist. Photography, stop-motion animation, drawing, painting, writing, art directing, modeling, cooking, she can do it all and does it all incredibly well. She’s the only creative whose work has moved me to tears since I was around 4 (I’m currently 32). Kris is the most widely and deeply talented creative person I have ever known. It’s an honor and a pleasure to call her my closest friend and occasional collaborator.

Thank you for taking part Justin!

The Magic Yet To Come: Part 1

Here’s a random and rather mysterious tale for you folks. Just the other day, I was at a local bar with a few friends. It was much like any other evening; we were sipping a couple of cocktails, recounting our adventures, falling over ourselves with laughter and half-drunkenly meditating on the meaning of life (a scientist once told me it’s 42 by the way). But then something truly strange happened. Read on to hear my story and please make a comment with your guess at the end!

The UK-based lensman breaks free from the strict confines of his profession by engaging in monochrome photography. His personal work is a plethora of abstract and experimental imagery, created in a style distinctly his own. Llewelyn is an ardent user of a Leica Monochrom camera, on which he mounted the Lomo LC-A Minitar-1 Lens, producing the most imaginative, phantasmic results.

    Giles Clement: The Wayfaring Tintyper

Reminiscent of traveling photographers of the 19th century, Giles Clement tours through the country with his assistant, Zeiss (an Irish Terrier), offering everything from portrait sessions to wildly creative photographic projects for magazines and companies. And although his mode of transportation may have evolved with the times, his photographic method and gear have changed very little compared to the photographers of days past. Now, with over 3 years of tintyping experience under his belt and an impressive list of clients, he's carved a name out for himself as an accomplished tintyper and continues to spread his passion for this ages-old technique everywhere he goes.
