Fireworks Show, Entertainment on the Cheap

2

For a little low-cost entertainment, nothing beats a fireworks display and having a camera with you is nice too.

Something that is associated with summer in America and especially July, is fireworks. They may cost a lot of money for those hosting the event, but for the viewer, it is as cheap as getting there and finding a good spot on the lawn.

Hawaii loves fireworks. We celebrate with them on New Year’s Day, Chinese New Year, and July 4th. Several displays happen on each of those days on Oahu alone. But, most of us can watch fireworks every Friday as Waikiki has a display at 7:45 pm. Locals like to pack a picnic dinner and gather along the Magic Island area of Ala Moana Beach Park (an area which was written about by @dearjme )

My buddy has decided to take his family every Friday during summer break for some fun at the park, a picnic, and a fireworks show. One week he asked me if I wanted to come along as he had seen other people taking pictures of the show and knows how much I love my cameras.

I had to meet him there early to get a parking space. Places were staked along the shore as the boats came in for the evening. People crowded the edge of the water as others were already setting up eating their pizzas, bentos, and for us: sandwiches.

We also saw lots of people setting up their DSLR cameras and asking each other the correct settings for their cameras. I brought a tripod, my LC-A+, 200 ISO film and a cable release. I got a few odd looks. As the sky darkened, I wound the shutter to the next frame…

It was a fun show for not much money. I trusted my LC-A+’s light meter and was not disappointed. It was funny to hear the conversation of the novice DSLR users as we walked by them checking out their photos. I cringe when I hear them saying they will fix the photos in post-production.

If you ever have a free Friday in Oahu, please come down with a snack and watch the free fireworks show in Waikiki.

The Lomo LC-A+ is known worldwide for its amazing features: automatic exposure, extended ISO range, and multiple and long exposure capabilities. Get your own Lomo LC-A+ now!

Tinker on the fly: A color filter made from spoiled film

Probably each one of you has been annoyed with failed film. This is particularly annoying when you get the developed film back from the lab, but you get blanks because the film was not exposed. It's either the film transport didn't work, or you have not taken the lens cap off, etc. Read on and I'll show you an alternative to just throwing away the film: Simply use it as a color filter for your camera, with the La Sardina for example.

Lomography Day Trips: A Three-Day Bicycle Route Across Italy and Switzerland

I live in the North of Italy, near the border with Switzerland. I love to cycle in Swiss territory, because their car traffic is lower than in Italy and because there are nice bicycle paths free of cars and motorbikes. In this article I'll show you a nice three-day bicycle path that I cycled last summer. Take a look after the jump!
