Kiev on Ice: Infrared Photos of Ukraine

2

Did you see Mario Balotelli's killer goals yesterday? Italy will go against Spain in the final EURO 2012 match this Sunday, so we're sharing these amazing infrared photos of Ukraine--one of the host countries of the football cup--that make Kiev look like a winter wonderland even in the summer time! Find out more about IR photography here.

Photographer Oleg Stelmach used infrared photography to capture Andrew's Decent, a recently reconstructed and reopened Ukrainian town that is a major tourist attraction. To understand why trees look snowy white instead of leafy green, you must first know how analogue infrared photography works:

Kodak Aerochrome, the most common of rare infrared film, was designed for use in aerial photography, mostly for forestry, cartography, industrial and military applications. Aerochrome is sensitive to the entire visible spectrum of light like regular film, except it is extended beyond 730 nanometers, making it more sensitive to cool light. You will get several different colors, depending on filters, equipment, and tricks that you employ.

In this case, Oleg treated his digital infrared images to primarily pick up whites and blues, transforming the historic town into a scenic vision of snowy streets and icy foliage. It’s summer in the capital city right now, which is playing host to the EURO 2012 football cup along with Poland, but these images show us that winter is coming, at least infrared photography-wise!
