Toa Payoh, one of Singapore’s oldest housing estates, is undergoing a major face lift. Not surprisingly, Toa Payoh is attracting international F&B chains such as Trung Nguyen Coffee to open an outlet here.
I love coffee. And I was quite happy to learn that Trung Nguyen Coffee opened an express outlet, G7 Express Café, in my neighborhood. It’s not that I don’t enjoy my 90 cents cup of coffee at the market; I do like to try different types of coffee.
Located at the block next to Toa Payoh National Library, the G7 Express Café occupies a small but prime piece of real estate.
This little coffee joint is a great place to read books you have just borrowed from the library that is less than 50 metres away. Though the express café’s ambiance is not as comfortable as Starbucks or Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, it’s a lot quieter than McDonald’s.
I visited this express café twice with my wife. I usually prefer my coffee black but decided to try the Vietnamese iced coffee. It turned out better than I expected. It was really smooth and strong without a bitter aftertaste. So I had it again on my second visit.
Although Trung Nguyen Coffee is famed for its coffee and its variants, this café also serves Vietnamese baguette sandwiches. My wife and I tried its chicken and beef banh mi sandwiches and thought it was good and refreshingly different from Subway.
What we like was how the baguette was crispy on the outside yet soft on the inside. Combine it with some Vietnamese chilli, pickled carrots, daikon radish, and cucumber strips, the taste sure is zesty!
This store is the new kid on the block, which means we’ll just have to let time tell us if they will stay or go. But in the meantime, if you are in the neighborhood and want to try a different type of coffee, you may want to pop into this express café and try one of their famed ice coffees.
