She has already stirred quite a following in our Community because of her lovely Lomographs, articles, and LomoWalls! But then we also have to see that this lady is a keen and brilliant LomoKino filmmaker who is worth looking out for.
You’re quite familiar of her, for sure! She is shoujoai or Ira outside the Community. Hailing from Germany, let this interview as this week’s LomoKino LomoAmigo introduce you to her lifestyle and interesting LomoKino films.
Full Name: Ira Vollenberg
Lomography Username: shoujoai
Location: Düsseldorf, Germany
Tell us about yourself. What do you do for a living? What are your interests?
Hey, I’m Ira, a 30 year-old girl from Düsseldorf. I am working as a computer scientist, and in my free time, I am obsessed by Lomography. I like meeting friends, traveling, reading comic books, and love chickens.
How long have you been a Lomographer and how did you find out about the Community?
I was already in love with analogue photography when I was a little kid. But then I lost it, and only used single cameras from time to time. When I discovered the Diana Mini Snowcat in November 2009, I fell in love and ordered it after some days of hesitating. Since then I never stopped!
Shortly after buying my Diana, I discovered the Community and read all Tipsters I could find. This inspired me a lot! Recently, I do not have that much time any more to be on Lomography’s website, but I still try to follow the news.
Frog Changes Face
Describe the LomoKino in five words.
Smart, easy, fun, film-making, 35mm.
How did you like shooting with the LomoKino?
I like it a lot! It’s really easy and makes fun, and the films that come out are very special.
What or who has inspired you to purchase and use the LomoKino?
Of course the publicity on Lomography! I was surprised, because I never thought of taking analogue movies on 35mm film. But it’s such a smart idea, and I had to try it.

Any funny or strange encounters you’ve had with it?
One evening I decided to make a film about cupcakes which looked like the cookie monster. Some friends of mine did them before, and I thought that it must be funny to make a film of them. I spent several hours with cooking and decorating, and after the first ones were finished, I was so tired and I felt bad from tasting all the cookie dough, that I just shot some frames and then directly went to bed.
If you could shoot any person alive or dead (or imaginary) with your LomoKino, who would it be and why?
Charlie Chaplin! He looks great on old films.
Kindly share to us any LomoKino movie you love the most.
The most great movie I’ve ever seen on Lomokino is The Incredible Story of Dr. Lomotnik

Any future plans with your LomoKino? More shoots or a full-length film perhaps?
I think the LomoKino camera is perfect for a holiday because this is the time of the year that you’ll remember most later.
But I also want to do more short-films, I’m still waiting for a roll that disappeared in the lab, and hopefully they will find it again. Maybe I’ll do some more smoking kills clips, cause I think there are a lot of possibilities to be killed in a spectacular way when smoking a cigarette.
Your advice to future LomoKino users.
Of course: Don’t think just shoot!
But I’d recommend everybody to use special films, like redscale, crossed slide films or black and white films. I see so many LomoKino movies with “normal” colors, and I think that they’d be much more interesting with a different film!
And when you found your film, wait for a sunny day, and then go out and have fun with your friends!
