Spice Up Your Holga Snaps with the Spilt Image Filter Set

2

Holga Split Image Filters can spice up your Holga for not much money and add a new dimension to your pictures. Take a look at some of my sample shots after the jump!

I recently acquired a set of Split Image Filters for my Holga Cameras. The set comes in a package with three filters. Each adds a different arrangement of angles through clear plastic. They are designed to fit into the Holga filter holder most times sold separately .

The prisms are very simple to use. I primary bought them to use with my 120 Holgas. They will equally work with the 135. I do not know how well they will fair to work with the Pinhole or PC models, I am sure I will try at some point, just because I am curious.

I loaded up a Holga GFN with Lomography Redscale 100 120 and took it with me on my walk. To be honest I am trying lose some weight and an MP3 player and a camera make the walking a whole lot more fun. They are not the most exciting pictures, but I managed to see what these filters are capable at minimum. Since I was trying the 12 exposure setting on the Holga, I attempted 4 shots with each filter. Here are 3 pictures with each filter.

First up, I used the filter split into three vertical sections. The center is flat and the sides are angled.

Next, I tried the one I refer to as the quad. The center is cut out and there is a four sided to the prism dividing the filter into four angled panels.

Lastly, there is the filter cut into thirds to the center. I could best describe it like something akin to a Mercedes symbol. You could arrange the filter how you would like on the Holga with the splits facing up, down or sideways. I kept it simple for the first test.

Now having finished that roll and still more than a few more miles to go along the track. I took out my LC-A+ to finish up the roll. I figured what is good for the Holga, may in fact be good for the LC-A+. I had to just steady the filter with my hand and made sure not cover the light meter. Here are the last four shots I needed to burn on my roll.

I had a lot of fun and it made my cameras feel new again for not a lot of money. If you have been neglecting your Holga because it feels tired or boring or just looking for some more fun, check out the filter sets for the Holga. You may find yourself using them with your other cameras too.

Unfortunately, it happens sometimes that your resulting pictures are not what you expected - the image doesn't look that good, the colors are bland, and the subject is banal. Indeed, it couldn't be picture of the year! Herein I propose a second chance for your pictures by modifying your 35mm negatives. Just pick up some ideas from here, experiment, and scan your negatives with the Lomography Smartphone Scanner. Anything is possible: burning, scratching, putting on hydrochloric acid, balsamic vinegar, nail polish, bleach, or raspberry juice... use your imagination and write down your new film soup recipe! You can find a sample of the effects in this article.

A Salute to the Masters: Sports Through A Plastic Lens (A Tribute to David Burnett)

The great American photographer David Burnett is famous for his unusual photos of sports competitions. He uses a tilt-shift lens to create miniature fakes, or a simple Holga camera to shoot in black and white. To write this tribute, I used my Holga to take some pictures of amateur sport activities around my city. Take a look after the jump.

A Salute to the Masters: The Girl with the Scarred Face (A Tribute to Juergen Teller)

This is a tribute to Juergen Teller, a great fashion photographer who continues to work with analogue cameras. In the 1990s he radically changed the way to make fashion photography. His models appear "soap and water", without heavy make-up, and his images seem taken like an amateur photographer. Between his nice works, there is a photos that I like so much, taken in Cuba and called "The Girl with the Broken Nose." Take a look after the jump!
