Manila CitySlicker Leslie: Back to the Mountains

One of the recent tasks given to our Manila CitySlickers was to show us a day in their analogue lives. Let us take a look at the monochrome snaps of Leslie in the mountainside and the stories behind them after the jump!

Name: Leslie Lipa
City: Pasig, Philippines
Age: 21
Occupation: Finance Associate

My trip to Sagada was probably among the most analogue days of my life. I intentionally backed away from everything modern and went back to the basics. It started with a 12-hour roadtrip up to the mountain province where life is really just simple and traditional.

On the way up, among the sea of clouds

How analogue was this trip? Let me count the ways:

1. Leaving the city and going up the mountain to get some culture, trek to Bomod-ok Falls, and go spelunking in Lumiang and Sumaguing Caves.

A graveyard near Echo Valley
First church in Sagada
Hanging coffins — the traditional locals do not believe in embalming and burying their dearly departed
Rice terraces on the way to Bomod-ok Falls
Locals, and my friends trying to blend in

2. Staying in a simple bedroom, which is literally a room with just a bed without an A/C or electric fan.

3. Not using my mobile phone and leaving my iPod at home. This meant more talking and catching up with my friends.

4. Letting go of the photo review of my digital camera. Since I had limited film but wanted to capture every moment of the trip, I used my digital camera the analogue way instead.

5. No checking of e-mails or Facebook/Twitter updates.

6. Using black and white film for that ultimate traditional feel.

And with everything so simple, you hear and see things better. There are less distractions from reality. When you have nothing else to do and your fingers are free from technology, your mind is free to wander. The little things you notice, which turn out to be big things after all. Analogue living is living meaningfully; less of the unnecessary, more of the substantial. So spend some time to take off those not so analogue glasses and prepare to see things in a different light — the real and raw light.

Photographer Gilbert Blecken Captures Iconic Musicians on Film

Back in the 1990s, Gilbert Blecken was a big music fan and wrote for his own small music fanzine. He would interview bands in between sound checks and take photographs of them. He was never a professional photographer or worked for a company; he simply did it for his fanzine. Twenty years on, Gilbert’s photographs have matured into an amazing documentation of some of the biggest music icons of that era. We caught up with Gilbert to ask him about these photographs and the fascinating story behind them.
