Playing with Color: Easy Peasy Lemon Mask for Your Summer Shots!

5

It is officially the summertime here in the UK, but when the sun refuses to appear, get busy and put some sunny colour into your film instead! Here's how to do it in four easy steps.

Lomography is all about experimentation, and I love being able to modify my camera! Unlike the scary settings and dials of a digital camera, I can simply slide off the back and get started. Whether it’s engineering light leaks, using expired or slide film, changing frames, or adding masks, never be afraid to be creative, your creativity can produce beautiful, and surprising, results.

I have seen many tutorials about using masks to jazz up your photos, and I wanted to try it out. I was in a hurry to get outside so I just grabbed whatever was nearest and fashioned a cute summery mask for the inside of my Diana+!

Equipment Needed:

  • Tracing paper, or acetate (I used tracing paper for the ‘torn’ edge effect)
  • Scissors
  • Sharpies or colouring pens
  • Double sided tape

Step One

Remove the frame from your camera and cut a piece of tracing paper the correct height and width to cover the desired amount. You can tear the edges or leave them straight, and you could cover more than one side, be experimental!

Step Two

Carefully colour in the paper with your chosen color. I would recommend light colours for this, depending on how ‘see through’ you want this section to be.

Step Three

Stick a very thin strip of double sided tape around the three sides that will be attached to the frame

Step Four

Attach the paper carefully to your frame and return it to your camera. Now, you’re ready to load your film, but be very careful of any protruding edges of tape or paper which may prevent it from loading smoothly.

Now, take your camera out in the sun and get shooting!

In bright sunlight, the mask is very yellow, and in darker scenes, it seems to be almost like a vignette — I was very pleasantly surprised by it’s versatility, and I think it adds a twist to every photo — even if I sometimes forgot which side it would show up on!

@radiactive and @0monique - thanks! let me know how you get on! @poppyprongs that sounds like a cool idea, just extend the film across much more of the frame I guess, and maybe leave a tiny strip so you can still get the torn edge effect - I'd love to see the results if you try it :)
